Beds and mattresses

Spend about 2 hours reading through this site, you will then be in a FAR better position to buy a mattress. It will also stop you getting fleeced for £4k by companies like dreams.

I eventually went for a mattress from this company, excellent doesn't come close. The quality is amazing.

Which one did you go for out of interest?

I got my mattress from Bensons, its a coil one with memory foam on top of it (sensaform) - cost £230, the base I got from eBay and was £70 (wooden slat one). Its firm but soft and gives me a great nights sleep.

I bought a "John Lewis Value Pocket Mattress" about a year ago based on the excellent reviews it's got on the JL website. It's an excellent mattress for the price, very good quality and comfortable. :)

After a lot of research we went for a pocket-sprung with latex (double-sided) mattress by 'La Romantica' from a supplier called 'Bedlum Beds'. I bought it through their ebay store as ebay had just sent me a '10% off your next purchase' code :D

Fantastic quality, incredibly comfortable, and probably between 1/3 and 1/2 of the price of a similar mattress from one of the 'bed superstores'.

This is being used on a 'sleigh style' leather ottoman storage bed bought from 'Furnishings Direct'

If I'm honest, I'm not sure I'd recommend a mattress of this quality/weight (particularly with a lot of latex) for an ottoman bed like this. It takes a bit of muscle to lift the bed to access the storage underneath (the Mrs can't manage to lift it), although once it's lifted it stays up OK.

We bought our La Romantica pocket sprung from Bedlum Beds also. Superb service and the quality is top notch, at a fraction of the price of what you'd buy from a store like Dreams (rip off).

4k sounds a lot but then again it's where you'll spend most of your life!! (Yes, I know we may only be in bed for 8 hours but even when awake you're not using any one such item as you would a bed).

And it also included 2 beside cabinets, quilt, quilt cover, pillow covers and a 32" LG TV in the bed.

I used to always buy cheaper beds, but now I will spend that little bit more. The last bed I bought from a local independent store cost me nearly £2k, but worth every penny. The mattress is super comfortable with pocket springs with a memory foam outer layer and the base is well built and solid.

Just for some thread closure as always...

Originally bought a Value 1000 Pocket mattress from John Lewis. However we went this evening as we also need one for the spare room and its just... awful! Despite the hundreds of 5 star reviews on their website. I don't know what they were all thinking.

Anyway we tried a few out and actually John Lewis have a very nice and simple range, so we were going to opt for their Ortho 1400 and 800 (main and spare rooms) for £550 and £350 respectively which then actually introduced the Factory Beds Direct ones into the budget.

So anyway, I've just ordered a Origins Pocket 1500 for the main room and Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 for the spare. Will hopefully get them delivered in time for the move on the 10th, and hope they're as good as everyone here says they are :p.

Good to see people on here Recommending Factory Beds Direct!

I have the Latex mattress they sell, it's ******* awesome. So nice to sleep on :D

I was very very tempted by the artisan pocket 2000 but couldn't stretch to it at the time. Went for the origins pocket 1500 instead, absolutely fantastic.

I recently purchased the exact same mattress from this company, it is fantastic. The quality of this mattress rivals those at 3x the cost, it's very heavy and deep and takes two adults to lift/turn it.

It's the same mattress that M&S sell for £1200

We bought a King size Kaymed Opulence Pillowtop Divan in march and it was £1400.

Not the most expensive bed in the world, but you spend a third of the day in bed, dont buy a cheap one.

For those that have bought a bed and mattress, where did you buy yours from and how much did it set you back?

More interested in what mattresses people have chosen as beds are much of muchness really, ie what type, price/investment, pointers etc.

Seems like there's few places to try them out too. Ikea was meh when we looked briefly and places like Dreams are a nightmare to look around and try things out as they're usually in converted warehouses with a flock of commission-hungry sales reps following you round.

If you know a friend that is vat registered you can apply directly to the manufacture and said that your home design company thats what i did, got hynos that retails for 2000 for only 650
