In a fit of madness, I decided a laptop and xbox 360 would be enough and that I no longer needed a rig. So I ended up selling my i7 2700k setup last week at quite a loss.

A week later I've realised I did'nt need a rig just for gaming/work etc but also because the rig was my hobby- tinkering, overclocking etc etc

Now I'm in the silly position of putting it back together as cheaply as possible. I'm tempted by picking up the g1 guerilla x58 board on offer then scouring the mm for an i7 920 (last one sold for £67). Seems that will be my best bang for buck whilst still being kinda beastly with triple channel ram and full sli support etc whilst being bloody cheap.

Any advice on what you would do? Bear in mind the look of the motherboard is very important ie why I like the look of the g1 series from gigabyte as it matches my case! :)

you could go z77 when that is out, it supports the current i5's and i7's as well as the ivy bridge stuff so you might be able to pick up some cheap chips on the member's market, failing that a P8Z68-v would be good with an i5/7

I wouldn't go for the X58 board - it may offer triple channel and SLI/CF - but truth be told a Z68 board with x8/x8 CF/SLI would be a better bet.

The G1 board + a £70 i7 920 will cost you a total of £210.
A good Z68 board like this + the i5 2500K on todays deal is a £250 in total.

IMHO the i5 option is worth the extra £40 as it performs better, overclocks higher, runs cooler, supports SATA3/USB3 properly and supports Ivy Bridge CPUs.

thanks for the replies guys- even the more 'brusque' ones are welcome! I am really thinking of just going balls out for a 'budget' x79 build. I know I would not benefit from it over 1155 for my everyday use but what the hell :)

ended up picking up a 2nd hand p67 sabretooth/i5 2500k/8gb corsair 1600mhz/gtx 560ti twin frozr for £330 delivered.

Not as good as what I had but thats a good deal right??:)

Will you at least be in profit after all this madness??

Lol not really! My buffoonery knows no bounds as when I sold my kit I also got rid of my m4 ssd as well as my retail copy of w7!!!

I must say I deserve it for being so indecisive! Lesson learnt though is no matter what, I will always have some kind of rig in my possession!
