I've been away since early this year and have had no idea what's going on in the world.

Since I've returned I've noticed that windows 7 is just around the corner and sp2 has been released for vista.

I'm still on XP atm. I have vista business 32 bit and 64 bit editions, I tried them a long time ago (about a year, maybe more) but I never got on with it, when I tried 64 bit I had a few apps that were not compatible so gave up with that quite quickly. The 32bit was better but still a bit buggy. I can't remember the exact problems I had but it meant I went back to XP, think it was just silly things like my network card not being compatible or overclocking tools not working and the like.

Have things improved with vista, both in terms of compatability and stability or has it stayed much the same?

With that in mind I could wait til windows 7, although it would have to be a SERIOUS improvement over both as I would have to fork out for it now (no student deals anymore:()

What would you advise?

(Oh I have an old C2Duo @2.6, 2GB Ram, 7800GTX. Not really interested in gaming, just general desktop work)

Cheers.

Vista was much improved with SP1, and is pretty solid these days. The problems you describe with Vista are what shaped it's general perception unfortunately but only exist these days as FUD.

Vista/Windows 7 is a massive improvement under the hood and W7 gets a few interface changes and is generally easier to get on with than Vista.

With that setup, I'd go for Windows 7 Home 64 bit if I had to choose. You'll have to check yourself if you hardware has 64 bit drivers available though.

Hmm, done some reading about windows 7 but I don't think I can justify the money. I think it's going to be between XP 32bit and Vista 64. I just installed sp2 on a mates vista laptop but he picked it up early so I couldn't see if there was much of a difference...

Any more suggestions?

Yep Windows 7 is definitely your best bet, fantastic OS. Faster to boot than XP, uses less RAM than Vista and is altogether a much more productive operating system.

Where have you been if you don't mind me asking? Prison?

Lol, na, traveling. Bit more enjoyable!

Thanks for the input. Sucks having no money!

Well you seem to have the luxury of a copy of Vista Business so I'd install Vista Business 64 if you don't want to spend any money on W7.
