Hey guys I currently have ano Asus extremely 4 gen 3 and it 2500k October to 4.6
Today I was given a sabertooth x58 and a it 950 is it worth switching them out ? Or just put them in my spare case as a second machine with my 480?

Despite being an older chip, the 950 is capable but probably on a par with the 2500K. It does depend on what you use your system for. if it's just straight-up gaming, then a 2500K at 4.6GHz is still a very good CPU.

I would stick the i7 and x58 board in your spare case and make sure they work properly. Then you can decide if you want to take a gamble.

Although they're not officially supported, it seems that there's a number of people who have run a Xeon X56xx series CPU on the sabertooth x58. It is a bit of a gamble, but a Xeon would be better than your 2500K for multi-tasking. The X56xx series are 95W hex-cores that can be decently OC'd. You can pick them up on the bay for sub-£100.

It's a long thread, but here's the OCUK discussion about them:

2500k is only slightly more powerful than the 950 as the link provided by mickyflinn shows, but rather importantly also overclocks a lot better. With your existing overclock you're going to see a downgrade in performance, so keep the 2500k in your primary rig.

+ 1 . Also you know your current system is stable with no issues. :)

Don't the X58 boards command ridiculously high resale values too?

Yep, that mobo is much more exciting than the CPU for the reason Borealis says, it can take 6+ core Xeons that are going cheap these days.

Stick with what you have OP and sell, or look into a 6+ core x58.

Bear in mind that if you are running an OEM copy of windows its tied to the original motherboard. From memory you can change it, but need to call microsoft up. If the donated one came with Windows, you're good though - just use that license key if you swap out.

I'd just build a second PC though. You've got the most expensive parts unless you are wanting the latest bling graphics card.

You can reinstall an OEM copy of Windows, but you'll probably end up having to call the automated reactivation number. Had to do this a few times with my old XP PCs and also with the parents' Win 7 PC.
