Hi

I've been given a pc (specs listed below) and its a server/work station PC. Correct me if I'm wrong but having a duel CPU setup is pointless for gaming?

Anyway I was thinking about selling the CPUs ram and mibo and spending all the cash on a single CPU setup.

So the main question is it worth anything and would the cash buy me something much better for gaming?

e5 2620 (2.0ghz) x2
asus z9pe d8
32gb 1600mhz ram. (Can't remember the make but its gaming type/make)
Corsair h80i x2

Thanks for any advice

This cpu is 6 core 12 threads clocked at 2.0ghz. For gaming its not good due to its low clocks and architecture drawback from 2012. For rendering it will be similar to modern I7 (I think). Personally I would sell it if you want to game n it and get an I5 + motherboard+some ram if budgets allows , however I cannot say how much you can get it for it as Im not allowed on due to forum rules. The ram you have for server board is unlikely to be compatible with new motherboard but check if its Un-buffered Memory you can use it with z97 motherboard and compatible cpu

The ram is corsair vengeance. So should be good in any ddr3 board?

The PC was used for rendering. It's also had a quadro 4000 in it but I upgraded that

OK so these cpus are not that good for gaming and if sold the cash could buy me a decent used CPU and mobo?

I'll likely keep the ram if the newer board is ddr3.

Im not 100% sure on how it will effect so many cores ect but if you would be using a Dx12 gpu then the api would use the extra cores and would potentially end up being more worth while than a traditional cpu configuration?

That's a cool setup though i would personally keep it for something other than gaming if it turns out to not work well for that.

It's hard to say as there isnt many auctions on bay so not sure how much exactly 2cpu + mobo are worth but personally I would give 190 max for it.

I would just keep it and save up for i5+mobo as it's very nice set up for server

Yeah I looked on the bay a few weeks back and there's nothing to give me a price on what to go off.

@Harry ive been googling duel cpu for gaming but its not coming up with much. If this is the case that getting a new gpu would be better ill do that. As you say its a "cool" setup. I could start a trade thread. I'm only up the road from you ;-)

That board should fetch a fair amount. Like Harry said dx12 could make gaming on it a lot more viable but its not here yet. It would still be fast for rendering and number crunching.

Have you tried gaming on it yet? I'm using dual 2680's and while no game has been able to use all the treads its still usable for gaming and in theory should only get better in the next few years.

Also while you still have the rig it would help a lot on the SAT@home challenge which has 4 days left on it if you feel like contributing.

Why not simply download or install a game you play and see how it runs?

I've been gaming on it for around a month. I've got a gtx590 and my res is 1920x1200

It's does the job don't get me wrong but if I could sell and use all the cash for something better then why not. I just feel that it's being wasted?

I only game on my PC btw

Yeah your probably right. But I'm also thinking for when I get a new GPU and more future proofing.

But as mentioned a dx12 GPU may come into play. So this setup would be great then?

Anyone got any links for a read up please?

As you have access to the MM, the Price Check thread would be a more appropriate place to ask in regards to the value of PC goods. And, as you should be aware, no Price Checks outside of the MM are permitted.
