Essentially the title says it all but to clarify I'll explain fully.

My girlfriends Dad had a 360, which he's had for a couple of year now (i think only that long...can't really remember). It died on him just after Xmas, suffering from, I believe, 3 red lights. He has gone out got himself a new 360 Arcade and kept his hard drive. He has now given me the old 360 to see if I can do anything with it.

I've not been able to check that it is definitely suffering from three red lights as yet as he gave me the power supply from the new 360 as his existing power supply is a little fiddley to get out of the place it's in, however the newer power supply doesn't fit in the old console, so I'll need to swap them before i can really do anything.

Before I give an X-Clamp fix etc etc a go, I thought I'd see if it's still under warranty from Microsoft. I've signed up to xbox live (girlfriends Dad never used the 360 online) and registered the console to me.

Under warranty info it says that the standard warranty expired on 3rd Jan 2009, It also mentions that a three year warranty applices to conditions indicated but three red lights.. Would I be right in thinking this console would therefore still be under this three year warranty and hence I could get it replaired by microsoft for free?

Yeah, i've looked at that thread, I was really just wondering if the bit where it said standard warranty expired but then went on to mention the three year warranty for the 3 red lights, meant that it was still covered for three red lights faults cos although I think my girlfriends dad has had the console for 2 years I could be wrong and he's had it longer than that.

Just ring them & give them the number off the back, If they say it's expired just Cry like a girl & they will fix it for you most of the time anyway, Microsoft ladies are Lovely.

Well, called them, they said it's in warranty so have submitted repair request online, now just waiting for the shipping label etc to be emailed through.

I have done this several times lol. If you kick up a fuss for example "Your kidding right? The thing breaks down in a matter of days after the warranty ends and you won't fix it? This is surely a scam, I'm going to crime watch."

The "repair" that MS do does not fix the underlying problem, the rubbish X-Clamps they use to attach the heatsinks. Expect it to fail again.

I have seen plenty of microsoft repaired xboxes come to be fixed ( microsoft put a certain warranty seal sticker on repaired ones so you know its been done by them ) and almost all had been done the same way. Clamps removed and paste reapplied and clamps put back on. I did see one with a new type of clamp design but it was still going to fail eventually due to the design.

The actual fix you can do yourself easily ( if you can build a pc you can do the x-clamp removal ) and the parts can be had on ebay for peanuts. The only tools you need are a small flat head screw driver, the correct hex/torx screwdrivers ( i can't remember the exact ones off the top of my head i just have them in a box at work ) and some heatsink paste.

The fix simply involves removing the x-clamps, removing the heatsinks and replacing the fixing bolts with the new ones and cleaning and reapplying the paste and bolting it all back up. Turn it on and if its still red ringing then let it warm up ( ie get damn hot ) with the fans off and then tighten the bolts and try again.

There are plenty of guides on the internet showing you how to get inside the case without breaking any of the plastic tabs.

I do about 6 or 7 most weeks and id say only 1 in 10 is beyond hope :p

Well, I got the UPS label emailed through, sorted a collection time which they met, picked up the console, then on Friday UPS delivered it back to me and...it's all working perfect!!!

Went and got myself a second-hand hard drive from my local place that does pre-owned stuff etc, for £28 expensive for a hard drive but with a warranty and only a couple of quid more expensive than several I've seen go on the the bay.

So, got myself a 360 (with HDMI) for a mere £28!!! :o)

mine has recently failed, i have expired the 3 year warranty, but they still repaired mine online with np's.. get it back tomorrow !
