Hi all,

I work for a software company, and sometimes they sell off old Dev PC's that are no longer being used, usually for £100.

The spec they have available for sale is:

* Intel i5 6600 CPU
* Asus H170M-E M-ATX motherboard
* 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
* 360GB Intel 540s SSD
* 1TB Seagate Barracuda 3.5in 7200RPM HDD
* AMD R7-240 2GB GPU (Which will look to upgrade)

Is that a reasonable spec for general browsing, some web dev work, light gaming etc?

Also, if I go ahead with it, what GPU ideally should I pair with it? Something like an RX570? I need something that will ouput 1x4K and 1x1440p resolution.

Many thanks in advance,

Edward

That's a fine quad core PC. You'll need a better GPU. For gaming at 1440p I'd suggest as good a GPU as your budget allows.

Thanks. Happy to game at 1080. I'm a developer, so my setup is a vertical 24" 1440p and horizontal 27" 4K monitors, hence why the GPU needs to run Windows at those native resolutions. Am happy to game at 1080 on the 4K display though :)

double check the PSU - some Dells have small ones without stndard connectors. Which would limit what you can use (as it needs to be powered by the pci-e) to I think at most a 1050ti (the small ones)

I have some spare parts at home, being an MATX case, fans, and a 500W bronze semi modular PSU.

No, it’s not a Dell. It’s a custom built PC that the IT team built for Devs, but have since updated the specs of, and therefore this spec is no longer used, hence the selling off of them
