Moving out, naturally the entire street is cabled apart from the one I'm moving into :p

So, reliable ADSL ISPs these days? Who should I absolutely avoid?

You will get mixed responses tbh. Every ADSL ISP has had issues in one area or another. It's probably best asking people in your area.

All ISP(s) have their problems. I'm thinking of switching from Cable Virgin to BT ADSL/Sky or another service. Infinity/FTTC isn't available where I am just yet.

if the street is cabled, and just not your house, then virgin will still come and install. i use plusnet. seem to be good on price and reliable. but it is only my my back up service, main one is virginmedia

I've been with O2 for three years, they're usually quite solid and pretty cheap too. They're doing a pretty good deal at the moment too where you can get some nice Xbox Live stuff for free with a new/renewed contract.

If you can get their LLU services, Sky, Be or O2 are good. Otherwise BT resellers like Zen or ADSL24 should be good as well, but they're usually more expensive.

However if you can get FTTC or cable, Virgin Media, BT Infinity, Sky Fibre are the ones to go for.

If you get Sky ADSL and the D-Link router, this may come in handy: https://sites.google.com/site/pihsnodnaba/routerstats

Sky tie you in to a router and this is the best and easiest way to extract your username and password (from the D-Link) to use with a 3rd party router if you so desire.

Sky haven't used the D-Link router for over two years. He would probably get the new SKY HUB.
