Can someone please quickly update me, seeing that i need to buy a new CPU in the next week or so.

Devils canyon or Haswell ?

This is what I was looking at, but it's a Haswell i7-4790K

I have to buy in the US, so can't shop at OcUK unfortunately.. But I see OcUK has Devil's canyon, but in the US the largest supplier of IT components newegg, has only the Haswell's listed.

Last CPU i purchased was a sandy bridge 2600k.

Looking to do my 2-3 yr upgrade.

If you still have the 2600k and mainly game I would say keep it for longer. Devil was a update of Haswell and it wasn't really that much better but there will be people more in the know than me come along shortly.

I actually need to build my kid a computer for Christmas, so i'm going to need another CPU anyway.

What's everyone getting these days?

I would stick with the 2600K, it was a beast and still is today, very little improvement since Sandybridge tbh.

I guess you could go X99 as you would at least gain more cores / threads and DDR4, but if you're not benching why bother?

If you're not desperate for something new wait until Skylake or Skylake E would be my honest suggestion.

Devils Canyon is part of the Haswell generation, just a slightly newer revision (well, different stock clocks and some marketing hype) than first released - given a fancy name for no apparent reason. So it'll be listed under Haswell on most sites as that's what it is.
A 4790k is a 4790k, there is only one of them whatever name is being applied, likewise with the 4690k - this is the new version with higher stock clocks of the unlocked i7 and i5 respectively.

As others have said though - a 2600k is still fine, if it's well clocked there is no significant gain to be had unfortunately.

Edit: 4790k is listed under Haswell processors on OcUK too :) checked as I was surprised to hear they'd moved it!

As others have said, I recommend you stick with your 2600K.

CPU performance gains have slowed to a crawl since Sandy Bridge; Intel has changed its priorities and instead concentrated its time and effort towards improving the integrated graphics and lowering power consumption, qualities which are much more relevant to the mobile segment than traditional desktop users.

edit: just seen that you need another CPU anyway, in which case a 4790K would be my choice.
