Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my 3700x system but haven't been following the hardware market. I think zen 4 and raptor lake are coming out? I'm team agnostic so don't care red or blue I get just looking for the most sensible buy. I believe I'll need a new mobo and ram again this time?
Don't need top top of the range. But want like a 7 out of 10. Maybe a 12 core and midrange mobo? Just don't have a clue anymore.

Oh I should say this will primarily be for gaming

So my reason for upgrade is simple. I upgrade every second gen. Just to stay up to date.

I skipped Ryzen 5xxx now it's time for an upgrade. I'll be skipping the next gen GPUs then getting the one after. And so the cycle repeats. I don't "need" a new CPU. I just like keeping my pc up to date. I don't see the point in buying a 5700x because the gains are marginal. That's why I wait 2 generations before upgrading CPU/GPU.

Thanks for all the input guys. What I'm going to do is wait for zen 4, to both see how it performs and to drop 5xxx prices maybe. but probably will buy a 5xxx cpu anyway. Drop in "itch scratch". New GPU next year. Zen 4 in 2024. Sound ok?

So for near pure gaming use case, at 1440p, with an RTX3080.
Out of 5800x 5900x 5800x3D.

Most people say 5800x? If I sell my CPU it will only end up costing me ~£100

And are these literally a drop in replacement? no bios messing about?

5800X the most cost effective, 5800X3D is fastest for pure gaming

On X570 Taichi
5800X or 5900X is a drop in if you have bios version at least 3.40 (although of course recommended to update to latest)
5800X3D needs the latest 4.80 bios update
Thank you. Very consice! I'll upgrade mobo regardless. think im on 4.xx anyway.
Will go for 5800x

I could wait. true. But then I will get over excited about the new shiny 7xxx and start convincing myself I need it.
If I buy now I will let that launch wash over me. If that makes sense.

Money not really an issue right now (have a few grand saved up in the PC fund). But certainly don't want to throw it away! reading between the lines the 5800x seems a good itch scratcher.

Sorry to bump this up but just wanted to revist this now that the new Ryzen are out.
I'm still looking for an upgrade to scratch and itch but not spend a fortune. is a 5800x still a good shout in the face of new releases? Drop in replacement anyway. Then next year new GPU, than 2024 new mobo, CPU, RAM.
