Been stuck with speeds of 2-3 mbps for a year now. Time for some change.

Hey guys,

so i have been with TalkTalk for almost 2 years now and i believe i started off with speeds of 4-5 MBPS which i didn't find too bad. It's only now that i realise i need faster internet for my media course which i will be taking further into university this september.

So there have been instances where my speeds drop to about <1MBPS and stay like that until an engineer comes over and fixes it. However the engineer which came last week was unable to make much of a change. Fibre optic is not an option for me as it's not been installed in my area.
So after speaking to my dad i have convinced him to let me switch (i pay the broadband and telephone bill).

I was thinking of switching to Plusnet however i keep hearing mixed reviews (much like any provider), so i wanted to ask you guys what would be the best provider for me.
Im looking to spend the same price i pay for TalkTalk or less, which is £40.

Im based in Central london (nw1) and in order to connect to router i need to connect via an ethernet of about 10 metres (which plugs into another router based in my room).

Sorry if this all sounds amaturish or idiotic, but im really down to my wits end and when it comes to networking/internet im just :confused:

I don't mind using virgin and i checked via the BT website for fibre optic.
I might consider getting a better router as i've heard that can increase speeds. Right now i have the standard talktalk router and TP-Link TL-WR1043ND (in my room)

How do i go about adjusting the noise margins? I read online that the latest firmware for my router fixes that but it did not for me.

Got a HG533

you should be hitting 20mb with that line attenuation unless your in an area where its still hasnt got adsl2 you should have the full 8mb

Im gonna have to request that another engineer comes over. Im thinking of leaving them at the end of this month as i have talked to Sky, Virgin and other providers who all promise me speeds of 12-20mb.

It's appalling considering im the only one who uses the internet...

They'll very likely try and charge you for the engineer.
why go thru the hassle? If you're thinking of changing ISP then just change?

Alternatively, connect to test socket and repost linetstats.

Talk talk are just garbage.

Move to...

BT
Plusnet
Sky

I use BT, if you use the online chat, you can find great prices for Broadband only deals

Moved my cousin from talk talk to BT recently, she had a year of drop outs and terrible speeds, to instant stability and great speeds as soon as she changed.

My current tariff is £13.65 a month for unlimited BT broadband, I paid the line rental in advance at £141 for the year, works out cheaper that way.

Go BT ,

Plusnet have the worst customer service i have ever seen, and there service promised me speeds of 16-18Mbps down. I was only recieving 5-10Mbps , yet before i left BT i was getting 17Mbps so im going back to BT now. Wish id never left.

I would never chose BT due to their CS but never used plusnet. I found sky great for their CS, shame o2 have been bought by sky as they were great.

BT = Indian tech support
Plusnet = UK tech support

The speed difference doesn't make any sense. Maybe you had a dodgy router.

if you have one that sounds like the best bet to rule out any cabling issues with the main socket.

and sorry if i've misunderstood, but that description seems to indicate 2 routers are involved, with the inclusion of "which plugs into another router based in my room" ?
