Hey all, I'm moving to Exeter uni soon and since my beloved S. A. Brains is mostly confined to Wales will have to find a new staple bitter. Is there anyone who can tell me what is generally served down there and what it's like?

If you are going to be drinking in student unions or the like then you might have to accept a more common pint, maybe something like John Smiths or similar as it should be fairly widely available if it suits your taste buds.

I've RTM'd for you :)

As a fellow student there, I have had an *extreme* chance to sample to local offerings.

As a staple, there are plenty. Exmoor beast is tasty, but the local favourite is Otter since the brewery is nearby. Check out the Wetherspoons beer festivals, there are usually about 5 a year and it's excellent!

Thumbs up to Otter Bright, though I only have it at a festival down there - it's sadly not up to Brains standard imo.

Damn Greene King's influence rounds these parts  my town's just opened its first brewery however, producing 2 ales, and the one I've tried is damn fine..

OMG Exeter!!! I finished there 2 years ago

nobody's inn at the beginning of term and as much whiskey as you can hold

Oh yeah, Otter's good stuff. I did some work in Taunton a while back and the pub opposite the office did Otter, none of your hand pulled malarky though. Tapped keg behind the bar - lovely!

Are those held at the Imperial?

Indeed they are. It's a a soulless aircraft hanger of a pub but it's cheap with a large beer garden which is what matters most to students. :)

Make the effort to get down to the Double Locks, you're bound to find something you like on offer down there. I think the Bowling Green generally had a decent selection of bitters too.

And if you can't find a bitter to your taste in those places make a trip to Topsham. :D
