Well, just completed a new build, Seeking advice on what programs I should ABSOLUTELY install on this Vista 64 machine before accessing the Internet for the 1st time?
Cheers.

Well, there isn't anything you absolutely must install before connecting for the first time, especially if you're behind a router based firewall. It's not as if all the evils of the internet will descend upon you in a orgy of wanton destruction :p

Maybe a good anti-virus app and a firewall (if you aren't behind a router based one that is) would be something I would recommend. But really, there isn't any reason why you can't download them from 'said' machine anyway, although no doubt it is safer to already have them lined up.

if you go directly to the website to download an anti virus then you wont have any problems. i forgot to install one on just a web machine for a month, after installing one i had a few tracker cookies and that was about it

I downloaded AVG to a 'stick' and loaded it on the new machine.
I reckon with the anti-virus software, coupled with the inbuilt Windows defences...should be enough...

Kill Box, HJT! and good task manager that shows everything.

If I have those 3, I dont need a single AV or other crap ;]. Well configured router helps as well.

Firefox 3/2!!!
I got i got most of my things stored on my mp3 player (30GB) that has all the basic drivers and update them every few months incase i need to reinstall or such.

Good question, and equally good answers,

i like the use of the mp3 player as a storage device, not something that will get miss placed like mem sticks, or hard to remeber what stick has the build files you saved last month on them.

thanks for that tip.
