hey boys and girls! i'm pondering the idea of buying an slr and i'm after advice. What camera would you recommend for taking pictures of flowers(girlfriends a florist) some landscape and some macro. Also i'd be hoping to maybe take photo's/possible videos(time lapse) But that could wait for down the line.

Any all rounder? My brother an dad have canons but they use their cameras for taking pics of jets. So i'd happily use a Nikon if thats better for what i need.

i'd most likely go 2nd hand to start with, maybe a budget of around £500 for a body and lense? Possibly more if need be.

Cheers for any help and info.

Cheers for the replies guys. Yeah i guess going down the canon route is the better option.

This might sound like a stupid question, but would you say a good quality lens is more important than the camera itself? i see some 100mm macro lenses are about £600. The reason i ask is i could invest in an expensive lens and get a cheaper body?

Sorry for the double post, but on the lens front, i dont think they have that many lenses. My dad was a keen photographer back in the 'pre digital' days, but not so much now. lately hes just been with my brother taking pics of the jets, so they have big lenses. So their isn't many.

hopefully not thrown a spanner in the works.

I'll need to have a good read on lenses because it's all mumbo jumbo to me haha, it's like trying to explain pc specs to someone who doesn't have a clue about pc's.

Right, so from what I've been reading the 550d is pretty much the same as the 600d, and the 650d is pretty much the same as the 600d, apart from the 650d has better video stuff?

So do you think a 550d would be a good start, or even a 500d?

Yeah I did look at the d7000, lovely camera. All depends what price 'budget' lenses are. I'd happily spend £300-400 on a lense. Most of this year's photos will be of flowers, so a distance of under 1 meter. Then I wanna get some proper close ups too. Hense why I'm thinking macro.

The 35mm 1.8g should be good enough as it has a pretty good minimum focus distance of 40cm. If you need to really close like below, then some cheap extension tubes will do the trick, but long term you'l want a dedicated macro, like a 40 or 60mm.

*snip*

Thats a lovely pic, exactly what im wanting to do! Looks like the d7000 is the winner then. guess i better get saving then!

Yes I agree with you, but the OP is referring to just starting out & asking for advice. Most newbs think if they buy a D800 for example & put a cheaper kit-lens on it, they'll get fantastic photo's.
THE most important thing is ....the photographer! ;) but in general terms, spend 1/3rd of your money on the body & 2/3rds on the lens to start with.

Which is the only thing putting me off right now. Im terrible when it comes to buying tech. i usually spend far too much money on whatever im interested in, then it just sits and collects dust.

going by that dxOMark website, the D3200 sensor gets the same overall score as the 5DIII. I know these a totally different cameras and the mk3 being FF. But looking at the scores, would i be right in saying the D3200 would be better at landscape photos than the mk3 if they were using identical lenses? or am i being a cotton headed ninny muggins and saying "Hey, this has a higher number, it must be better!"

D3200 a better option maybe? would mean i can spend more on a lens or 3 :p

Hah yeah it does seem an expensive hobby. I think I'll see about a d7000 and a 35mm lens( Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8 G DX Lens?) just going off the jessops website hah. They have the body only at a pretty good price new.

Those lenses ARE pretty expensive. But it'll be worth it in the long run! Will get the 35mm to start off with, then get saving for a proper macro. With the price of 2nd hand d7000's, I might as well go new. £630 new from jessops. Even ebay struggles to beat that.

£544? Great price! never heard of this company, any good? Plus, might not be a good idea gettin it from jessops, seeing as they have gone into admin.

Pay by bt? cheers for the heads up though.

Guessing the p store is blocked because it sells tablets? i see no other reason.

oh my, that is terrible! I for one will not be buying from that site...for at least 2 weeks, then i'll get something.

hypothetically, lets say they/i was caught, how much tax am i looking at paying?

Ah well that's fine then!

You'd most likely need to ban the Internet! The amount of company's that try to get around tax and what not will be thousands!

Oh you guys are just trying to confuse me more!

Brian, you say the 650d or the d3200. But isn't the d7000 in the same league(price wise) as the 650d? if not cheaper? Actually, just looking, its weird, the 650d is £522 for the body only , OR £431 for the body and a 18-55mm lens. huh?
