Hi there,

Im never done taking photos with my wee Samsung S750 , and want to upgrade to a DSLR, now i will prob go to £250 at most as i am a student, or is there any cheaper ?

Kinda things ill be taking photos of is cars, computers, electronics and the odd landscapes.

What kinda spec do i look for and lens and what they will achieve ?

It's a little over your budget, but look at the Nikon D3000. It's a good camera from a reputable brand and probably the best within your price range.

Unless you go second hand i don't think your going to find much for less than £250.

Your definitely going to need to go second hand, all the entry level cameras are well over your budget..

D3000 with kit lens is £399
1000D with kit lens is £407

Both good base spec cameras though :)

Buy yourself a second hand Nikon D40. Spend any future monies on glass. Then upgrade the body at a later date if you change your mind about photography. I think this is the best way to invest your money as the lenses hold their value and a D40 can be had for £200.

Canon 20D for that money with an 18-55 IS lens...

I bought the 20D and it is a brilliant piece of kit. I've compared it against a similarly priced 350D and it's like night and day.

Not played with Nikon hardware, so couldn't tell you about that, but I suspect it's just as good.

20D isn't a beginners camera though, you'll get great results with some skill but for a beginner the lower end models tend to me more intuitive and produce better results from day one. Depends on where you're looking to go and how seriously you're thinking of taking it?

The 20D was my first DSLR (although I had played with my bro's 300D and 5D Mk2 for a good long while), and it's not rocket science. Considering how much they cost in comparison to other such cameras (such as the 350D I bought recently for my dad), they're SOOOO much nicer to use.

If it's still too much, stick it on the little green box setting (whatever that is) and let the camera do the work. Besides, if the OP's even considering an SLR he/she is going to have to put the work in to make it worth the outlay...

Otherwise, just go and buy some PnS POS for £80.

Go and try some cameras a see what's comfortable. I found the neither the Sony or the Olympus were comfortable to hold, the Canons were ok but the Nikon was much better. Ended up buying a used D60.

In the same situation, and i was personally looking at the Nikon D60 from a well known auction site, for a shade over budget i would think

be a good starter?
