I need a hobby to pass away the boring evenings so have decided I want to learn the guitar. I'm going down the electric route so could do with some advice.

1. What's a decent electric guitar and amp for a beginner (ideal budget for ALL kit should be around the £250 mark)

2. Kit I know I need are guitar (obviously), amp, tuner, leads, plectrums. Is there anything else I need?

3. Any recommendations on where to buy from (or where to avoid)?

Thanks

I started playing 5 years ago, bought one of those package deals off the Internet. The Guitar itself wasn't bad, it was good a beginners guitar and the package itself came to around £140 odd (Guitar + Leads + Amp).

I stopped playing after about 2 years when I moved house (neck was badly damaged during the move). Anyhow, this year I picked up a new guitar from the local guitar shop. Ibanez Gio (GAX series) for around £120 and i'm loving playing it, much more so than I can recall when I was playing my old guitar.

Basically, my point is that if you intend on sticking with playing definetly look for a proper guitar, i'd highly recommend my model as its cheap and gives off a really nice sound, even on my cruddy 10watt amp. If you're only getting one to see if you'd like it, get a package deal or something, that way you won't have spent too much and can always upgrade in a few months time.

GAK are supposed to be a good site to buy from, shop around abit though.

I think I got my starter set for £180ish, Yamaha 012, Kustom 15watt Amp, lead etc. So £250 will be more than enough.

I'd advise getting lessons, at least just a few. I had 4 then went self taught.

Everyone will say this but then it is pretty important... PRACTICE! at least 30mins a day if you plan on making some progress :)

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have plenty of time to practice. I'm a single parent so have many a boring night in on my own.

That GAK site looks pretty good. They have a couple of Marshall packages well within my budget. I'll take a look around and see what I can get.
