Hi,

Ive just started playing this game. Ive started doing the grave digging quest, I get to the house where the two guys are and I keep dieing, one of them does something to zap my will power and I just cant kill them! I must be the worlds worst gamer!! I use a couple of flares on them and ive got the sword from the monk on the main quest. Has anyone got any combat tips as all I end up doing is stabbing wildly at the left mouse button. Ive not been playing the game for long so I havent built up many skills, should i be doing so before I attempt this quest.

TIA - Kev

What race are you?

If you hold down left mouse whilst you have your weapon out your character performs a big swipe attack. You can also press forward whilst doing this and your character will lunge forward and swipe, often takes much more health off your enemy!

thanks, I didn't know that! maybe I should read the instructions....

iirc the race is breton (??), can't quite remember as I only installed it last night but its one which favours magic

I'm a dark elf you see, and I can use my majika to heal myself from attacks. You can probably do this too. Hit tab on your keyboard, you will then see a screen with a health bar bottom left, weapon symbol, magic symbol and a compass. Click on the magic symbol, here you can select what magic to use. When you have selected what you want to use (healing etc). Press tab and whilst ingame you can press C to activate that magic.

you're doing the imperial city merchants quest involving thoromir i take it?
i seem to remember thems be big nords you're dealing with. and you are a weedy breton!

you can't compete blade to blade with a great many characters at low levels unless you specifically chose a combat melee role with a character and attributes to match. you'll find it near impossible to beat 2 nords mano to mano. best advice is either come back to that quest once you have some serious destructive spells up yer sleeve or have increased your blade and strength skill/attribute.
if you really want to stick these nords go down a stealth route. poison your weapons, use stealth multiplier attacks, use poisoned arrows and snipe them. the list of options is limited by your murderous imagination..... get creative!

or do what i do whenever im suck on a melee combat, and im sure youve probably already sused this, but with a shield, block, and when you see them hit your shield, get in a attack then block again, repeat until there dead, and if your low on health, instead of attacking on one of those attacks you get, heal, then block.

you will last longer and get more presise hits in. Or if you manage to get a great block in staggering them back, mage one of those large swings and then get back into block.

p.s. or snipe em off with a bow like someone said above

Or do what someone in a gamer mag I read the other day did. He was dying on the same bit time and time again, so changed the level to easy and did his bit again. 1 hit kills them and then he put the level up.

Obviously this is cheating, and it does effect the rate you level up, but could be an option.

*Note: Writer does not condone cheating*

thanks for the replies, I've read bits about the levelling system of this game so I wasn't sure, if the 2 guys I'm tying to kill would be as difficult to kill no matter what my stats are.
When standing back with the bow and arrow, can you hide so they don't see you or do they attack when you land the first blow?
ill try the stealthy poisened weapon tactic sounds fun

setting level to easy is ghey :D

blocking may not be much help cos your block skill will be low and your endurance (governs blocking) will be low.
play dirty whilst at lower levels until you can compete.
breton is actually quite a good arounder but it will take a while to get skill and attribute increases across the board. focus on one form of offense eg mellee combat or magic. when you can hold your own in that start diversifying.

I think I have a lot to learn, what is a melee attack and how do I fight dirty?

You need to get some mud from your garden, rub it over your face and swear at you monitor as you try to fight.

seeing as this game is quite involved, does the type of mud I use or the level of vulgarity I use while swearing make a difference when attacking these two chaps?

lol!

busted! now everyone can be an oblivion guru :D
because of the game lore and depth i look upon it as an epic such as middle earth from LOTR.
just browsing sites like the linky, reading the stategy guide book and forums is absorbing. no other game has ever pulled me into its world so much.
the guys at bethesda whom do all the research and make the game lore have a great job. im jealous.

for the bow bit, yes, as soon as the first arrow hits, the npc is gonna chase you down, but this is why you do whats called 'kiteing', you start off in stealth with your pack of poisened arrows, that first x3 crit hit (think its x3 at low lvl right? been so long lol) will do some moderate damage, and all you have to do is run backwards in massive circles (this can be done in dungeous fairly easy) and keep shooting, just make sure you got a decent aim, and sooner or later, they will die :)

vanilla oblivion bows suck a bit. you end up firing off so many arrows the enemy looks like a hedgehog!
i used erics quad damage (set to triple standard damage) so arrows work as they should.
weeee
thunk!
argh!
*keels over*
have disabled it now as im a master of destruction so target spells tend to make a bow obsolete.

im about to do a post for oblivion links/mods etc so you'll find linkys there.
