I will be building a new PC this month and plan to overclock for the first time if I am brave enough!

I am thinking about buying either a Q6600 or an E8400 with a P45 motherboard.

In terms of overclocking what can I achieve with the above processors without changing the voltages?

Do I just up the FSB 4mhz at a time then test it?

Hope you can help,

Johnny.

Well I got the P5Q-E and the E8400 yesterday and I managed to get 3.6ghz by just changing the multiplier to 9 and setting the fsb to 400, the last time I overclocked a computer was back when I had one of the T-Bred amd's. I know the E8400's are capable of reaching 4ghz, Just waiting on the necessary settings now :)

When i over clock my pc i just whack the mhz up a couple at a time, reboot and test the pc out for a while. if all goes well then crank the mhz up a little bit more and keep going until it starts crashing or BSOD. Once you get to a certain stage you may need to put the voltage up a tiny bit and it will make the system more stable. Just takes time and patience.

My ASUS mobo will detect any problems during overclocking and will automatically reset everything back to default in the event of a problem protecting all the hardware...so to a degree you can't mess it up.
