Firstly, Hi,

Long story short I’m looking for a new laptop / P-C build. However I don’t know where to start.

I want it mainly for editing video up to 4K. Currently coming from a 2012 MacBook Pro. I don’t want to spend 2.6k on a new mbp. So I started looking back at windows based machines. Along the lines of Dell XPS 15 with 4K screen, then i started to wonder if a desktop machine would be sufficient. Looking into desktop machines seems to be a huge minefield of options and configure ability.

So i seek some advice where to start, anyone got any recommendations or been in a similar situation.

Budget wise for a desktop or laptop recommendations around £1500?

I'd go with a desktop just for the bigger screen. Assuming your software doesn't benefit from from a GPU, it will make your desktop a lot cheaper going with a lower end GPU.
People tend to go with i7-8700 CPU for gaming. Games generally benefit from higher speeds rather than more cores. AMD threadripper and the like offer more cores and a bit less speed by comparison. You should check what your software benefits from before deciding.

Desktop will offer more power, flexibility and bang for your buck.

Buy a laptop if only you need portability or space is an issue.

You can build a super powerful itx pc if you don’t want a big tower, it’s what I would do in your situation.

What program(s) do you use?
