I recently just became an uncle. My sister gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Abigail. She was two weeks over due and weighed 11lbs at birth.

What sort of responsibilities come with being an uncle? I don't want to be the uncle Buck or uncle Paulie type of uncle. :p I guess my responsibilities will only come into play when she is abit older... for now all I have been doing is buying her lots of gifts and giving lots of hugs. :D Its great being an uncle. :)

Any advice from any other uncle's/auntie's on the forum?

This is her at 5 weeks old.

Whatever you do, when you take her to the cinema and on the way she is being annoying in the back, do not say

"if you 2 don't behave I'll take you to High Wycombe children's market and sell you and you'll never see your mum and dad again"

They tend to cry at that.

Ahhhhh......Cute!
Love that bow in her hair!

Not sure about the stuffed toy though.......
:D

JOKING!

But seriously gratz to you all!
Im an uncle to several kids, and the best bit is, you can be more of a friend than their dad can! It's great, I'd say don't worry too much about it. Just enjoy it.

Uncle to 6. Not much really, parents do all the work. Don't tell them off to much though when they start fighting, I just try and have fun with them as I said their parents will do the disciplining of them.

Yea, I guess her parents are going to be more strict with her and I can kinda be more relaxed with her. I hope we have a close relationship when she gets older. I really want to be there for her all the time.

Would be pretty cool if she comes to me for advice and tells me her problems ect. That would be pretty special to me.

We are taking her out to the park on sunday to feed the ducks (if the weather is nice). Going to have to miss the man utd/liverpool and city/arsenal games though. :(:D

Congratulations :D

The best bit about being an uncle is that you get the fun of playing with the kids (and their toys!) but can hand them back at the end of the day, or when they need a nappy change :P
Possibly the biggest responsibility for an uncle is the hunt for the noisiest toys you can find for presents :p

Also be very careful about teaching them swear words.

It wasn't my niece and nephew but a friends kids. I was telling them about Phuket, and I'm sure you will guess how I was pronouncing it, and they thought it was great.

Later that day i was sat in the living room with my friends when the daughter came down shouting

"mum, mum my brother was swearing"

"what did he say"

"the f word"

at this point no alarm bells were going off for me

"SON GET DOWN HERE"

"yes mum"

"were you saying the F word?"

"Peter taught us it today, he was telling us about that place you can go on holiday to"

"um I think it's time I went home"

"You sit down, you're going nowhere"

We laughed about it when the kids went to bed :D

Congratulations :D

Exactly, I have played quite a few toys and games now, like getting a second childhood.

This.

Just be careful though for when you have your own , your siblings get their own back :D

Congrats! :D I'm an auntie to 7 and sister has another on the way :/

Not sure what advice to give really other than I told my nephews and niece that if they ever needed help I was there. Otherwise I tend to just be the fun auntie. Apparently I'm my niece's joint favourite :D (I'm only 12 years older so I guess I'm more like a big sis to her)

Try not to get sucked in too much when she's older. My niece was very good at playing all sweet and getting things. I'd take her into town for a walk and she'd say "auntie Karen.......I love you" of course I'd be all "aw that's so cute why don't we go get you some sweeties!" :D

congratulations.

As an uncle, one of your most important responsibilities is to ensure a small but steady supply of alcohol at all family events from the age of about 14 onwards.

Love being an uncle. I have been an uncle since I was 12 yrs old (sister a lot older than me). I have 4 nephews and love spoiling them, they're like my kids but without having to take care of them haha.
