Being asked your occupation - is it normal?

It sounds like you spoke with a secretary who handled the question of funding crassly that's all. Don't take it personally, the person probably asked the same question of many other people just as crassly.

It wasnt a secretary, it was the physio herself and it was before anything else was even mentioned. Im not taking it personally, i just found it unprofessional and it was enough to make me go elsewhere. I wanted to know if others agreed it was rude.

It's hard without context. To ask what you do and make you aware that a protracted process of private physiotherapy could be pricy is not rude, as knowing your occupation is often very relevant and prolonged private medical help is expensive. If you are unhappy, go elsewhere as that is one of the advantages of private medical services, you can go to who/where you wish.

But you need to make sure you are not a binner and may I ask, what do you do?

I was after some private services (healthcare)?

Healthcare ???

Its not so much that she asked, its that she asked literally before anything else.

I dont know what a binner is :o

As I said, if you are unhappy go elsewhere, the rest is just us trying to understand whether you should be butt hurt at some quak asking you if you can afford her, which is a bit pointless. Take your hard earned elsewhere is my advice, power is all yours in these situations.

Thats what I did, as mentioned :)

Of course you would ask first. Why would you go through an entire conversation to then mention affordability at the end...after a potentially long consultation. "it's a very expensive operation you know , do you think you will be able to afford all costs" for you to go errm probably not actually and wasted her time.

I'm sure she has had her time wasted many times so now she starts with the thing which is usually the issue which is the money.

They want to have an idea of how much stress you put on your body on a day to day basis, how active you are or how sedentary your job is.

It could also be the cause of your injuries.

In many cases but here the fact it was pretty much asked explicitly 'do you think you can afford it', it was probably mostly about the money

yup, you'd be asked your occupation in the actual consultation not when trying to book and when the provider who doesn't quote prices is blatantly trying to see how much they can get out of you

I've been to see a consultant last week and their pricing is quite transparent, 275 for initial consultation and 175 for followup... insurance company pays but if I were to self pay then the price is there for me to see on the booking letter and when drilling down into the website etc..

:p

Surely it's just a money based question? Although as you say it's only for physio rather than something like an operation. Also off-putting when they come across as condescending.
