Being KO'd

I have boxed for years now, and have what in the fight world what they call "a good chin", as in I don't get KO'd when being hit hard to the jaw.

Me and my friends were talking about this the other day, so I was just wondering why some people are knocked out easily, and others are not? Is it bone structure / density etc...

I am also one of those people who has a good chin. I used to do kickboxing, played rugby and now do traditional karate, I have also been in several street fights where I have been hit vary hard. I have never gone down or been ko'd.

I guess some people have a good chin and others don't. I think I have dense bones as I am heavy yet not fat. Hit that that sweet spot and it doesn't matter how good your chin is, you are gonna get sparked out.

Same here! When I was younger, I was quite skinny, but still heavy for my size. I have never been Ko'd, or even wobbled. Maybe it is dense bones then?

You get knocked out if you brain hits your skulll.
So maybe its to do with the size of your brain or how well it sits in place and doesnt move around or something

Never been knocked out yet, been in a few fights and played rugby for 10 yrs, been hit pretty hard aswell.

Spot on, doesn't matter how many hits you can take, or how big you are, if someone catches you right, it's lights out.

Ant

I certainly think it is not something you can train for either, of course, you can train your neck muscles but the classic boxing KO is a hook punch on the end of a chin which twists the head violently, thus shocking the brain. The other KO I have seen is the common rugby one where a player runs head on into someone and that compresses the head into the body.I doubt any amount of training could help that.

There must also be a bit of spirit involved in it, I mean, when I have been hit hard before I have seen stars and my head was spinning but instinct took over and I just fought back harder.

I wonder if anyone knows the actual medical processes involved when someone is knocked out?

I remember that when Mike Tyson was at his peak in his early 20's it was often said that because he had so much muscle surrounding a certain nerve at the back of his neck it was almost impossible to be knocked out. Its the whipping motion when you get hit that triggers something in this nerver and knocks you out. As he had such a large neck or muscle mass around it was almost impossible to floor him

I've done that one, didn't knock me right out but I was dazed for a little while.

one of the ways to be knocked out is when the jaw is knocked out of alignment, the edge of the jaw (the connecter at thetop of your bottom jaw bone) comes briefly into contact with your brain and you go down :p not something you can train for just a case of hitting someone in the right place at the right time.

Iv never been knocked out, i boxed for about 2 years, i didnt lose any bouts, but in sparing i did get a few beatings on the chin

It is hardly an unimpeachable source but if you've ever seen Million Dollar Baby the way it is described as the neck twisting just a fraction too far which means the bodies automatic reaction is to black out to save you from any further damage as "you don't know what you are doing".

I've been downed once while sparing, never in a proper fight or in a competition.

I caught my Kung Fu instructor with a peach of a jumping back kick smack in the chest and took him off his feet.

I apologised for going over the top, he said thats ok and we carried on.

Soon as we touched gloves he came right at me, I blocked a couple of shots and got suckered into moving to block a kick that didnt materialise, he came right over the top of my guard and give me a big right hand smack in the side of my head.
I dropped to my knees and made to push myself up and he got me again, i literally saw stars with that one.

Never let myelf get caught out again.
