Belkin Anti-static braclet?

I have been building / repairing computers now for a good at lest 12ish years... I have never used one of those things, and i cant say I ever will..
personally i think its abit of a con, and all you need to do is just touch something metal that is grounded before you begin.. such as a plunged in computer...

I bought one from ebay for about £2.

I'd rather spend the money and make myself feel a bit securer, than not and inadvertantly fly my computer.

thanks guys. It only cost £5 from microdirect and I have bought a new mobo, Phenom II x4 955, gtx260 so just don't want to screw it up. :-)

Never botherd myself, I just touch the pipework on a radiator before starting work - that is if I remember :D

likewise, ive been in and out of computers/servers now for 12 or so years and never had any static issues.

I've never had a static problem in my life, but a friend of mine (who works for the University IT Services) managed to fry three motherboards in one week... the first two were whilst he was using his bed as a work bench, and working in thick socks on carpet. The third was probably unlucky, but who knows?! He isn't the most reliable guy in the world, but it still shows you can be unlucky. I might be tempted to invest a whole £2 in one of those static wrist-bands next time I make a new build, but probably won't :P

ive built a whole PC on my bed before in my socks (not just my socks.... lol) and still had no issues :D

lol. that just bought up a funny image.. building computers with just socks on.. lets just hope the case has been nicely de-sharped! you would hate to get anything court on the sharp edges!

I remember wondering if I needed to use these anti static things when I built my first PC, went with the "touching the radiator" technique instead, so far, so good. Built 2 recently where this was not an option and used a side panel of the new case and had no issues with either build.

Why would you be getting anything caught on sharp edges  :D

Back on topic :p - ive built a few systems in 6 years and have never had an issues with esd. As mentioned before - a bit of a con :)
