Belkin N1 Wireless Modem Router - Problems

I have recently installed a new N1 router as in title. I am unable to connect to Windows Messenger or indeed Microsoft sites in general. There is nothing obvious in the settings preventing this. Disabling the router firewall and windows firewall seems to make no difference. All other websites seem fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you opened the ports?

I think I opened the relevant ports - on the Belkin setup they call it Virtual Servers and have pre-sets for various programs. However that didn't make a difference and fully disabling the firewalls didn't help - so I'm well stuck
