Belkin router problem

I live in a house where we have broadband internet shared (both wired and wirelessly) via a Belkin F5D8230-4.

At first when I moved in I was using the net wirelessly but found that the connection to the router was VERY unreliable, it would drop the connection (from my pc to the router, not the router's connection to the net) constantly when in use. In particular if I started a download it would almost instantly drop. With the connection idle my PC would stay connected to the router pretty much indefinitely.

I fiddled around a bit but in the end I gave up trying to troubleshoot the wireless and just connected by ethernet.

At first the problem was masked as I didnt constantly get the little pop up telling me the wireless connection had dropped. But nevertheless, the same symptom continues.

I have ping -t [router's IP] running continuously and with the connection idle, it returns the ping <1ms as expected, 100%.

When i try to load things (web pages etc) the problem begins. I might get a few pages loaded, but very quickly the ping starts to show 'request timed out'. If i click stop on all windows and wait 30 secs or so, the ping starts to get returned again and the cycle continues.

Just posting this will probably have taken several tries.

any ideas?
