hey all my first post in this section :)

just picked up and old

Bell and Howell 644 TQ1 projector

from my uni as they put it in the scrap pile which is basically take what ya want... (atleast i think it is :p taken other stuff like pc bits before and they didnt mind)

and well ive given it to a mate as a present so its set up on his shelf and looks pretty cool cos we coudlnt find the power lead.

but i found the power lead today :D so we plugged it in very cautiously as well, it was being thrown out for a reason which is usually failing safety inspections :P but it turned on fine, powered up, light came on!!

GREAT!!

SQWARRRRRKKKKKKK

ahh what's that noise! so we turned it off quickly cos it was making a squeeking noise, sounded liek a cars fan belt slipping. we did notice tho that the reels didnt spin so coudl it just be a belt pully that has jammed and just squeeking??

if so do you think its safe to just take the back off it and try to fix it? i mean got nothing to lose? and im an engineer so i kinda know mechanical stuff :p, if its just cogs and such dont think theres much chance of being shocked.

also anyone know where i can get a free manual for this, or any idea where there's specs/info and possibly how much this is worth???

muchos thankos :D

Why would it not be safe? Take a look and go from there.

cos well they usually just throw dodgy stuff out, like unsafe to use, and well the panel that i have to remove also covers the electrical input so dunno how good a state the electrics will be as it is from the 60's :p but ill just give it a go me thinks :D

Well if you're not happy doing it straight off, then the manual for the 644 can be had for not too much. A quick google will bring up some sites selling them.

me student = no cash :p i did just find one as i was posting for 10£ but meh, i'd rather it for free :p hehe ill just go for it. still just wondering how much they are worth abouts cos it seems in really good condition apart from the reel not spinning

i doubt it be too much trouble to open and have a gander! stay away from any power capacitors etc that still reatin power after it being removed from power source.

Tut tut tut you are an engineer and don't want to take the back off?? ;).

There won't be anything dodgy in there (well there might be but not if it's turned off). As you say it sounds most likely to be the drive belt slipping or snapped and jamming the insides. Take it apart and have a ganders.

Ooo and don't forget piccies :)

yea just having some spag bol then im going round, ill take a good few pics for you all, hopefully wuith it up and running too :) *crosses fingers :D *

well found out the problem, theres a threaded sleeve that drives 2 cogs and its broken so those cogs dont turn, which a belf is trying to drive so hence the squeeking noise.... just gotta find a replacement one of these hehe

here's the main pic

speaker at the front

this is the manual winding thingymajiggy and the back of it

here's the panel which i removed at the back, notice the massive capacitor and ive labeled the broken part

and finally heres a close up of the damage

hope all these links work. so now i have to try and find one of these, maybe the company (if it's still going) has spairs? what ya think or any ideas?

Mmm I think you'll be lucky to find a replacement :/. Looks a pretty unique part which I highly doubt is made anymore! You may prove me wrong though, but I can't help pointing you in the right direction I'm afraid.

In the loft I have an old B+H 16mm projector and various films (some Laurel and Hardies too :)). The projector is slightly more modern than yours though; although I note yours has sound so it can't be that old.

Good luck in your parts search mate and keep us updated :)

PS if you are doing a BEng surely you know somebody who could fabricate a part which would fit? ;)

doing the MEng now ;) and that's what i was thinking, might give my old work a call and see if they know anyone

UPDATE:

emailed the company and they have given me some suppliers contact details that should have the part :D ... however the addresses are in the US... so might reply and ask for any UK addresses
