Maria Bello ("A History of Violence," Coyote Ugly") will replace Rachel Weisz in the third installment of Universal Pictures "The Mummy" reports Variety.

Bello will takeover Weisz' role of Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell. Brendan Fraser, Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are already set to star in the Rob Cohen-directed film.

Scripted by "Smallville" creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the film brings the O'Connells and their full-grown son (Ford) to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas, where they battle a shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor (Li) cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

Ok, Jet Li is now in the picture. As much as it was already going downhill, it's now taking a complete nosedive into the ground. Not a reflection on his acting skills but we all know the only reason he's in it is for the fighting scenes.

yeah but Jet Li films have kick ass fighting... so that's a plus.... but it doesn't save the fact that we have no Rachel :(

Why do I feel this is going to be a straight to video production but only the quest for ROI will mean it will be rammed down our throats by PR..

Sounds like they're moving completely away from the original format.

Oh what!!! That sucks, plus its not going to be the Egyptian mummy...

The only positive thing I see is its scripted by the makers of Smallville.
