I have to change the PAS belt on the Rover.

The one on there is cack, all crusty and fractured with chunks missing, it squeels like my ex misses.

I bought a new belt from Rover for £7.

I got the bloke in the spares place to look up some stuff on my car by punching the reg into the computer.

The belt is manually tensioned.

I tightened my Mondeo cam belt and this was manual.

Question is, how tight do I do the PAS belt? How tight do I know how to do it.

The worse squeel is on full lock, the belt just stops moving! Why is this?

Haven't got a clue about your car, but on a Golf GTI ;), there are two bolts that slacken the pump off and the tensioner is mounted to this. Dead easy. Might be the same sort of affair on yours - its very basic mechanics, whatever. :)

See here:

Edit:

You won't be able to get a socket on it so I hope you have a pretty hefty spanner, failing that you can always drop the engine.

You can get a belt tension gauge for 'v' belts (thats assuming its a 'v' belt). I've got one here someone but, not sure where it is at the moment. It works by pressing it again the tensioned belt till it clicks then you read the scale to see what the tension is.

EDIT: Just remembered where it is, Its made by Gates and its called a Krikit II V belt tension guage.

It's worse on full lock as that's when the pump is under max load. Like when a loose alternator belt squeals more when the headlamps are on.

Well, attempted to do this yesterday and the 13mm spanner I have just would not shift that tensioner bolt.

The engine only has to drop around 3-5cm to get a socket onto the tensioner though.

I have never dropped an engine before and it sounds scary and like I will break something. I'm sure this is not the case but I want to ask on here on how to do it, the best way about it and anything I can break which I need to prevent.

Cheers!

Trolley jack under the sump with a piece of wood between them to even the weight across the sump.

Undo drivers side mount and remove completely.

Lower engine :)

Only have to do the drivers side? That's what I was going to do yesterday.

Nothing will warp or twist?

How can I get a spanner or socket onto the nut as the bolt is around 2 inches long. Can you get ultra long sockets? Any idea what size I would need?

You can get ultra deep sockets but two inches is quite a lot still. I've got a set but dunno if you could get it onto a 2" peice of bolt. Check out cromwell.co.uk see what long sockets they have (your in Brizzle right? Cromwell is just off the feeder)

Draper do do some special open sockets and wrenches that will work no problem but they are serious £££

I don't live to far from the Feeder, I will go and have a look down there.

I am not sure if it is 2 inches. Maybe 1 1/2. I will snap a pic in a bit.
