I went and ordered a Geforce 6800 off OcUK yesterday from the this week only.. 2nd one down on that list. It's a BFG Geforce 6800 GS OC, based on AGP 8. My current card (until tonight!) is an old Leadtek Geforce 5600 VIVO, again from OcUK a couple of years back.

I would like to run a 3D benchmark on the old 5600, before changing it out to the 6800. Any ideas for one? I've known a couple of benchmarks in the past and one from two weeks ago, but I've forgotten the names of all three of them!

Also.. something I should have checked before I brought the card - does the Geforce 6800 need power going to it? I know that there are some power-guzzling GPUs out there and I totally forgot about this until now.

Thanks.

I quite like 3DMark '03 or '05 for gfx card benching.

'01 will be majorly CPU-limited and '06 is a bit of an odd one - benefitting from a dual core CPU.

You could also try Aquamark, but I've never been 'into' that one.

go to futuremark and download any of the 3dmark benchmarks and do a before and after comparison with the new card.
Also you'll need to connect your card to you psu, but you should get a splitter cable included it the box if you need one.

For the power, is it the same type of cable that goes into a hard drive / optical drive? 4 pins with yellow on one side?

Sort of, if you don't have an ATX 2.0 compliant PSU already then you will need a 4-6pin connector which takes two ordinary molex connections to make one PCI-E graphics connector. As mentioned you should get one with the graphics card.

The 6800 GS is AGP 8, not PCI-E. Is the cabling still required, and what sort of cable will it be? Thanks.

Sorry my mistake for not reading closely enough, yes it is an ordinary 4 pin molex connector so you just need 1 spare :)
