Before I attempt overclocking i should run some benchmarks on my new upgrades and see how well it fairs out there right? What benchmark tests overall system performance can you recommend trying?

There are many different kinds of benchmarks that focus on specific aspects. Some are more gamer orientated, others are graphics rendering, and still others are CPU based.

What I would suggest is deciding what your main focus is with your PC and then select the benchmark that most suits your needs.

Overall right now I would say that if you have a DirectX11 graphic card Vantage is a nice overall performance benchmark. Just very very long.

SuperPI - Single threaded ap, allows you to see the improvement in core speed.
Cinebench - Multi-threaded/cored application that shows rendering performance.
lavalys everest - has a suite of benchmark stuff, for memory, cpu and the like.
Heaven - Is a good benchmarking software for Graphics type stuff.
3Dmark Vantage - Also good for graphics benchmarking, but a one use only unless u buy it.

Theres more but can't think of them right now lol.

Performance test 6 is also pretty decent if you want an across the board mark scheme that you can save and compare across each tweek you make. Its not the greatest or the most sophisticated but it will give you a rouch idea on what and where has been improved with the overclock.

My new pc is 100% workstation i like to benchmark overall system performance excluding 3d gaming graphics aspect since irrelavent for its intended use. So anything the measures motherboard cpu ram and hard disk performance to provide something to compare against would help make sense of it all. As you can guess new to this overclocking lark.

Performance test would do this. tests gpu, ram, hdd, and cpu. as i said its not overly in depth or extensive but it gives a good basic guide for the whole system.

CPU - SuperPI, Sisoft Sandra, Everest
HD - Crystaldisk, HDtune
Graphics - Heaven or Vantage but a better test would be with 'real' games. Graphics tests however can be subjective as most people who run graphics benchmarks also do so with an overclocked CPU/memory which will also impact on the results.

Fantastic will download those benchmarking softwares and post up the result hopefully highlight any issues before attempting to overclock.
