Thats very impressive. If its a genuine test it will have been run on very ropey drivers and more performance will come.

Actually they appear to be running without the latest SLI profiles for some of those games from comparisions against the 285... and in others the 295GTX would be running out of VRAM at those settings (slide 67)... so its not really as impressive as first seems at all.

One of the problems with SLI, it requires to much configuring for its own good.

Maybe in the past... I've rarely had to break out nHancer since upgrading from the 7950GX2... 99% of the time you don't need to do more than enable it in the control panel and make sure you keep the SLI profiles updated.

Wait so this part has me confused: ATI Radeon HD 5850 ATI Radeon HD 5850
> From -25% to +120% compared to GTX 285 (tested in 19 games and 50 configurations)
Does that mean the 5850 will be better than the GTX 285?

I get the impression it will lose some and win some against the 285 but over all it is faster

But, if you forget, don't know about or are a inexperienced user then your SLI rig will still perform poorly in the past, future and present ?

Funny though how all through last generation AMD compared 4870x2 to GTX280/GTX285 as if the 4870x2 were a single GPU card, now they're finally competitive on the single GPU front they're doing it properly.

That's advertising for you. :p

They may have compared it to the gtx280/285 because at the time those were nvidea's fastest cards and were around the same price point as the 4870x2. I also see from those leaked benches that they are comparing the 5870 against the gtx295 also.

Was the 260gtx faster than the 8800gtx/GTS/3870? Was the X1800xt faster than the X800xt/xl, was the 8800GTS faster than the the 7900gtx.
IN other words, new "top model but one" being faster than the entire previous gen isn't surprising. The 5770 being faster than the 260-285GTX would be surprising, but if it gets reasonably close in performance that would be expected.

Errm, they compared the 4870x2 to the GTx280/285, because the 4870x2 was PRICED against the 280 at launch and the 295GTX wasn't even close to out when the 4870x2 launched, so they compared their £330 card, against Nvidia's similarly priced card. Whats surprising about that, likewise now the 5870 whever it ends up in the £200-280 price bracket, will be significantly cheaper than the 295GTX and priced roughly where the 285GTX has been priced over the past 3 months.

Then again when the 5870x2 is launched in an extra month or two it will be priced against the 295GTX so will be compared with it.

The 295 is beating the 5870 in half of those games @ 1920x1200.

Hmm all depends on pricing now, NVIDIA could still upset ATi I guess by completely dropping the price of the 295, which they could do since yields on the 295 are good and the product has been grounded for a long time

I'm sure a week or so after launch the price wars start :D, good for us lot so I'll be waiting a week or so after launch as NVIDIA will respond agressively and likewise ATi
