Is their any actual improvement over just having the mouse on the desk?

I suppose it stops you're desk scratching/wearing out.

Does a £35 mousemat improve you're gaming significantly for example?

and keeps the teflon pads in good nick

TBH i was a fan of no mouse mat for years, hated the things

now that ive got an S&S steelpad ill never go back to not having a mat.

if your gonna get one make sure its a decent size as i think the reason i didnt like them before was because they were too small and the mouse kept sliding off due to the size of the mat

My wooden table is dark blue, and without a mouse mat my optical mouse doesnt detect any motion at all. I stole a cheap dell one, so if i had a choice i would spend 35 on something else. but as Jokester said, it depends on both mouse and table.

The mouse is a MX518 not got it yet as it's for christmas.

Desk is wood (as opposed to glass assuming that's what you meant).

Just didn't want the mouse to be held back so to speak by not having a mat.

My desk is glass, even though my mouse works on glass I bought a Razer Mantis mouse mat. It was much bigger than I expected, its big enough to fit my Saitek keyboard on too. Its extremely worn out now, all the edges are frayed and rolling up`, should probably buy a new one.

On my old wooden desk I never used a mouse mat, it was very worn down after 2-3 years of constant use. Plus having a mouse mat stops any noise of the mouse moving around.

To be honest I would never spend over a tenner on a mouse mate. I have used the same Man Utd one for about 6-7 years! :)

The main benefit for me in using my mouse mat would be the wrist rest.

Not only does it help prevent RSI - which means you can game for longer periods :D - it also helps keep my hand steady and gives greater control.

I use the Razer aXactMat with the wrist rest and it's superb.

Well having your own mat would basically mean that you can expect a consistent performance from your mouse no matter the surface. If you are ok and used to your desktop it really wouldn't matter. (unless you are on a glass table)

Totally agree! Getting a lachesis and the exactmat with it :D. The wrist rests are epic

sure there are benefits
just rest the pad on the arm of your sofa....sit back and game away.
who says ppl need to slouch forwards when gaming on pcs/

i have a Microsoft wireless mouse on a wooden desk, ( no matt ) and with this i am not limited to the edges of a typical square matt , i have the whole desk as my area of movement.

when i lie in bed i can browse net watch you tube etc via t.v and use the mouse on the bed surface which works well even as far as 6 feet .

I have this setup and it works fine. As for wearing out a wooden desk  wth are u people doing with your mice?!

Used to have no mousemat, hated them. Just used a wooden desk. Then I got a razer deathadder and paired it with a boogiebug aimpad from OCUK and i'm not looking back. Much more comfortable and quiet, and the tracking is great, i'm sure much better than just on the desk, you have more control.

I didn't use a mousemat for quite some time, 'cause my layzor mouse would work even on my bed covers, however that mouse broke and the new one is too sensitive. So, I currently have a 'self-made' mousemat consisting of a A4 plastic wallet, a few sheets of paper, two sheets of card (for a little bit of rigidity (Thank you PC Gamer packaging!)) and a bunch of staples to hold everything together.

Who needs to spend £35 on a mousemat?! :D

I find using a decent mouse mat makes a whole lot of difference but it also depends one what your doing, if its gaming than yes a whole lot of difference but its just browsing and word docs etc then maybe no mouse mat is just fine or even a semi decent would do

I guess I got in the habit of using pads back when we had ball mice since you really did have a massive difference between using say a logitech wingman gaming mouse on a desk and on a func1030 pad. Glide and consistency were the key benefits I think, I always felt perfectly in control on the pad.

I think pads still offer the same benefits today although I must admit I've yet to use the most recent generations of mice. For my intellimouse explorer 3.0 I do notice a difference though, same goes for my mx1000.
