benefits of centrino?

not too sure if this is the same for others, but my centrino laptop gets far superior signal strength than anything else in my house. Can even pick up next doors wifi on the laptop. I do Struggle sometimes with the basic wifi card sometimes

Yup, Intel certified Pro Wireless coupled with a Centrino chipset (usually i845 I think, or 9xx for the DDR2 models) and a Pentium-M to be centrino certified.

My IBM Thinkpad T41 isn't centrino certified but is basically one. It had a P-M 1.6ghz, the correct chipset (i845 IIRC) but instead of Intel Pro Wireless, it has an IBM a/b/g adapter (which was better than the Intel at the time). However, signal strength doesn't seem quite as good as the intels, despite an antenna around the screen - I think it may have detached itself - I will get IBM to look at it after my Uni exams.

Anyway, moral of the story is, Centrino requires the 3 things or else it isn't Centrino. They are amazing for battery life - I get about 5 hours use out of my standard battery on max power saving (typically, which is good for days when I'm in for the whole day or have 4h straight) and 3 hours use on Power Management off. They run very cool and so are quiet often and are very powerful. A 1.6ghz is about the power of a 2.8-3.0ghz standard P4.

Versus a non Centrino laptop, the biggest advantage is lower power consumption which translates into much better battery life.

I have a P3 "m" based laptop and whilst it was good in its day, it struggles to last 2hrs watching a dvd. A Centrino based laptop should do this with capacity to spare.

thats not true

a non-centrino pentium m machine will have the same power consumption as a centrino one

Ah I get you ;) - but I think he was terming all "P-M's" as "Centrino's" in which case he is right as the P-M is one of the best mobile chips and offers excellent battery performance when compared to most others. Most consumers call P-M processors Centrino processors which in essence they are. :) ;)
