Hi,

I asked this in the benq thread but it got lost in all the other posts :) Just want to know which is better, or are they both really good and I would be happy with either?

I currently have an AMD 6950. And I am looking for a monitor with the lowest input lag for playing cs:source mostly. Want to try some 3D too.

I can get the S23A700D for around £80 cheaper than the XL2420T, and it comes with the glasses and the emitter for 3D. Don't you have to buy the Nvidia Kit for the XL2420t?

But, I would sacrifice 3D if the monitor was as good as my CRT for gaming. So maybe I should change the question, which 120hz monitor is the closest thing to a CRT for games like CS:source.

Well thanks for all the replies!! I am now even more undecided haha. I am not a fan of marketing gimmicks. Like take the zowie mouse that was designed specially for FPS games by gamers, it was terrible for me anyway, my old logitech mx518 is way better. So I am not sure about the benq for that reason.

People seem to be happy with it tbh. Would love to get a measurement of inputlag/response time. On the samsung 700d I know that it's very low according to reviews etc. But I can't find anything out about the benq response time.

It seems to be from reading through the forums that there won't be much difference between the two for gaming. It seems that one is designed to work better with Nvidia cards and the other works better with AMD cards. Am I right in this?

Basically what PCM2 said lol I was writing my post and didn't see it until I posted mine :-) glossy versus matter doesn't bother me. I am in room that I have great control over the light conditions, so reflective or not isn't an issue.

Ok, Everyone settle down :D I didn't think my question would cause an argument!! I am not taking any sides here, but there are a few things that I do know as fact. Like NVC said I have heard from steam friends that the 2410T wasn't great for FPS gaming. In fact, just like NVC, all of them returned theirs. They are back playing on their CRT's.

Pancakesniffer, thanks for your comments, but I really don't know how you could do a proper test of a monitor in store. Did you bring in your computer and hook it up to all three monitors and then try games on them? Or had they the monitors hooked up to different computers and you just played on them that way? I'm only asking because I have never seen this done before, if there is a shop that lets you setup games and stuff and play on them for a few hours before you buy that would be ideal. And they let you play online against people? This is must for me, because it's in multiplayer that I notice the response time most. Heck I don't think it's even possible to notice this in single player games. I am sure you could measure smoothness, colours and how well it handles fast motion etc in single player games.

But glad to hear you are very happy with yours. And the fact that you seen them all in store and picked the benq means that they must have improved on everything just like you said. And you are right, I am looking for the best monitor for FPS games, especially cs:s, but, I don't trust any of these designed by gamers for gamers monitors. It's just marketing crap. And it's obivious you feel very strongly that it is the best monitor out there at the moment for gaming, and you are actually using the monitor!! Your passion for it has actually stopped me going out and buying the 700D for the moment. :)

PCM2, I have found you a little condescending in some of the posts. Pancakesniffer was only posting his thoughts about his monitor. It's subjective I know, but still he has actually used the monitor which gives his opinion a little added weight. Saying all that, I do appreciate your comments, I know that you do a lot of testing of monitors and have a lot of valuable insight to give. I am waiting for your review of the benq before pulling the trigger. I also agree with you in one thing, I am not doubting Pancakesniffer, but I don't know how you could do a proper test of three monitors in a store. It's just like TV's, it's not until you get them home and use them for hours that their flaws are revealed. The 700D is probably the way to go, but getting the monitor from Germany is just a pain in the ass. Hope you can get to do your review soon so I can finally see some real figures :D

Currently I a leaning towards the 700D, it's just so much cheaper. And Dan_the_man has made the exact move that I am thinking of. He used to have the samsung 997MB and now has the 750D. He thinks the move was worth it. If he has found that the 750d is better than his old CRT then I don't know how the benq can improve on that.

Again, thanks everyone for the replies. It's always good to hear everyone's views.

I just dont get it.. all I did was talk nicely about my monitor in a thread which asked a question about it when I was in the same situation and give the op my advice and opinion...

What did I do for this guy to come along and tell me im completely wrong and not allowed to do that or im not 'qualified' to just talk about it?
And then tell me it infact has something wrong with it that hes just read on the internet that is about a completely different monitor and he hasnt actually got the monitor.

Sorry I cant see where I went wrong... I thought this is what forums are for? The op had a query about something, I had been in the same situation and experienced it and gave him my opinion and advice.... did nothing wrong in the slightest to get people telling me im wrong (which is impossible to be wrong about my genuine opinion based on my experience when the guys in question have never even seen the monitor) or not allowed to talk about such a simple thing?

At the end of the day this is all I did... and then I get two guys coming at me saying im completely wrong and pulling things from nowhere and im talking rubbish and that im not allowed to or not qualified to say stuff about a monitor?

As bigbeard said, you just went a little overboard in your defence. I might have reacted the same way once upon a time, but I try not to anymore. Arguments are good, there is nothing wrong with have a contructive debate about something, but name calling and getting personal isn't.

And I really think most people on this thread wonder how you can do a good test of a monitor in store. I certainly would love to know what store, or if you could answer some of the questions I asked in my last post, I really would appreciate it :)

Well I'm glad you've managed to trawl through all of that and pick out some good points from everyone to help you out. This thread is a good case in point of how some animosity can lead to further animosity and it is never constructive. I have gathered a lot of feedback from users of the SA950 and SA750 series of monitors who really resonate the opinion of 'Dan_the_man'. Generally the more they use it the more they like it. There are always some people who won't be able to accept the limitations of the TN panel technology and for them this decision is always more difficult. I suppose in a way you are in a fortunate position from what you said earlier about being able to control your lighting properly - it means you can enjoy the clear benefits (pun intended) of the Samsung's Ultra Clear Panel without significant drawbacks.

I should have also said thank you for taking the step back and trying to calm things down again. Yeah, forums are like that, sometimes you just go to take a step back and not get angry. Some people just have bad days when they post and it doesn't do anybody any good to respond in anger. It just escalates.

But now we are all friends again, we can go back to talking about the monitor!! :p Do you have any idea when you will be getting one? Prad.de is supposed to have a review done already, but won't be releasing it until the 20th of February. I can buy it for 2.50 or something like that. But I would hate to buy it and then find out it was only a preview!!

I don't have any problems with the limitations of TN. I have a pioneer LX5090 hooked up for all those things that I need a good screen for. Heck I still play CS:Source at 800*600 :) The scaling is probably crap in both the samsung and the Benq.

Panacakesniffer, have you tried playing games in 1024*768 on the benq yet? If not, do you think you could do me a favour and try it out? Just want a brief idea of how good/bad it will look!! Thanks!

I went to the ****** where my friend works and just looked around for a few hours to help decide which monitor I wanted before spending £300..... I was allowed to change a few settings on the monitors and play Serious Sam and nfs shift on them which are quite fast paced games and did for pretty long....
If you dont value my opinion or anything I say about my experience then ok thats fine.... But for someone to tell me that I am wrong (which is impossible because someone opinion cant be wrong) and Im not allowed to share it because im pulling false information out of thin air and talking BS (I dont understand how I just shared my opinion) and that I am not allowed or qualified to do so is absurd in all honesty, specialy when they themselves havent even seen the monitor, but regardless all I did was share my opinion and advcie based on my experience... that is it, didnt say anything wrong or give false numbers or any infact, just my opinion.

Ok, thanks for that, it's good to have friends working in these places!! :) I am still not sure how good a test you could give three monitors on three pc's. Not doubting you, just my opinion. It takes me at least a couple of days before I know enough about the monitor and it's settings to know if I like it or not. And I would need to play a multiplayer FPS game before I could say for definate about response time.

How are you finding it now that you have it at home? Have you played CS:S on it?

As for the last part of your post, do I value your opinions, well I value everyones opinion, good or bad. Subjective or not. And no matter how someone offends you on a forum you should try not to react. It's hard I know, but trust me, you will have a much better internet experience :)
