Yes, that monitor is very highly regarded for playing games. It is probably worth having a search for "XL2420T" in these forums as many people have it now and almost all of them play games on it - also that thread Deception linked to is well worth a read.
As for 24in being too small - I wouldn't say so, 24in @1080p is a pretty nice setup for gaming. To go any bigger (like 27in) you need to put up with larger pixels or no 120Hz mode (plus much higher prices for either option).
As for playing 3D movies - with that monitor you will need an Nvidia 3D vision kit (version 2 is best since it makes use of lightboost on the monitor), an Nvidia graphics card and some software capable of playing 3D movies (like Power DVD Ultra 10/11/12, WinDVD Pro 11 or Total Media Theatre 5).
