Bent AM5 pin - thoughts?

Hey there - I was a clutz and have seemingly bent a pin on my motherboard.

This is the best photo I have to hand… it’s basically impossible to see what is going on with the naked eye and even with photos.

It boots fine and survived an AIDA cpu stress test for 30 mins before finally getting an error, which could be from anything. I would have thought that if it was a real problem, it would have died a lot sooner than that.

As an aside; I’m in the middle of a watercooling build so the whole pc is out of action until I connect up the loop. It’ll be especially faffy to swap the motherboard, as always. I decided to get on with it since the pc was booting fine, I’ve had a couple of crashes in game but that could be from anything.

I’m not really sure what can be done about it tbh, or how much I should care. Thoughts?

Many thanks in advance.

Use a magnifying glass and a set of tweezers or even a cocktail stick and very gently realign the pin although that may be more difficult now that you have already clamped the cpu down on it. It's what you should have done before inserting the cpu really.

Can only echo the above from experience reparing a 3600 with many bent pins. It's going to depend on what adding the cpu has done to it I guess.

You can get away with certain pins that are not in use, so it may cause no issues, were you getting crashes in the same games before?

Try a photo from a different angle to see what's up - LGA pins are funny little seesaw/diving board shapes. Note how the foreground/right hand pins are more visible.

They are more like sprung reed switch's and that one looks bent back over itself. So may be able to encourage it back forward and let the CPU push it back down in place.

The previous pins were easy to fix. Just use a razor blade along each row and column to straiten several pins together so you don't over stress any single one.

The current ones can only be encouraged back gently as they'll stress break easily. Stand magnifying glass a real help.

Seeing as you're having issues and the socket is obviously damaged I think your first task is to deal with it.

Once you accept you're replacing it at your expense you have nothing to lose by attempting a repair.

I would probably bite the bullet
And do something about it now rather than later
Be a PITA once a whole loop is installed

If you don't have the ability/dexterity etc to do it yourself
One person on the forums it might be
Worth asking for help is vince
Seen him do all sorts of repairs even up to pin replacement
On CPU's

Thanks for the replies.

It’s not obvious whether the crashes are driver related, new bios related, or anything else. I haven’t attempted a gaming session on a ‘rock solid stable game’ - just one that’s probably less than optimally optimised (Layers of Fear remake). Again, it lasted over 30 mins with a cpu stress test which is a positive sign.

However, I’ve bought a fixed magnifying glass thing and some needles - I still can’t quite gauge whether it’s worth fiddling with before I’ve eliminated every other issue being a potential cause… I’ll probably end up breaking the pin or worse knowing me :p

That is super minor compared to some of the monstrous, multiple bent pins that others have dealt with. Check out Linus tech tips on youtube who has had much success with CPU repairs.
