Beryl problem

I am using Ubuntu and i have an ATI x1800XT card. I installed the drivers for that and they are working. I then went on to install beryl using a special guide for my card. This guide installed Xgl and Beryl and then rolled the version of Beryl back to a slightly earlier one(i think) to work with my system.

Beryl installed fine no problems, i can access the settings manager etc but when i choose "Beryl Desktop" from the Beryl manager, my screen goes completely white. I then can rotate the desktop and all i have is a white cube, on all 4 faces and 2 red beryl logo diamonds on the top and the bottom of the cube.

Now i have searched for a solution, but it seems there is no standardized one so does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to get it working? Also once its working, how to i get it to load up pre-made themes i downloaded?

Help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you ;)

well you've got a little futher than me. don't suppose the guide was for x1950pro cards as well? if so, can you link me up?

i can install beryl and start the manager but it just falls back to metacity when i try and select it. :p

ok cheers. can't believe i didn't find that one... :o

i've give it a go later, off out now. although running that first command has already told me i didn't have the xserver setup correctly -showing as mesa instead of ati- just fixed that so hopefully i'll get a bit further with it... :)

edit: nope still no joy. after trying to run beryl the xserver always defaults back to vesa? :o

oh well it's not essential is it... :p

edit2: even trying is definitely a no go now. i've just realised trying "fglrx" is what's screwing up my videos so i guess i'm stuck in vesa mode.... :(

I got it working! All i had to do was Right Click on Beryl manager>advanced options>rendering path and choose copy.

Works very well now. Can't believe its free.

hehe i just tried it again and it's working. i didn't even have to use the beryl manager. just logged on to an xgl session (like i did before) and it works. even the blue tinge has gone away from my vids. i'm totally clueless as to why it now works but didn't earlier..... :D

edit: spoke too soon. still working but on restart it defaults to 1280x1024 instead of 1440x900. and changing it is still a bit hit and miss..... :p

Good to hear its (partially) working.

Just wondering, i have seen these video's on youtube show windows exploding with nice firework colours etc...how can get them and how do i install them? I can see there is a couple of effects on close and right now i have teleport(i think) but there are only a few.

Hope you understand what i'm asking!

i can't even get anything that's builtin to do anything. can't get the desktop cube, none of the keyboard shortcuts seem to do anything. all i've got is animated menus and wobbly windows.... :p

edit: to fix my resolution problem, i've made xorg.conf read-only. i hope that's ok. me = noob. :D plenty of windows know how but this isn't quite the same.... :o

So you only get wobbly windows and animated menu's? Have you gone into your Beryl settings manager and checked that the cube and other stuff is enabled mate?

i'm finally getting there. i didn't have the emerald theme manager installed so i installed that. now i can run beryl-manager without it crashing. got all the other animations and cube working now. but i have to say all of this is more down to luck than judgement. :p

thanks for the link above. it's been much more use than the guides i've been using.

Ha, i know exactly what you mean but thats the learning experience. I have got it working fully now, i am really amazed by it and ubuntu, miles better than anything Microsoft have ever produced in my eyes and the best part about it is.....It's completely FREE!

The effects are so cool :D

now to see how long it goes before you get fed up and un-install it. :p

i just restarted to see if it was still working and it does. but another problem. before reboot my wallpaper was cloned over the 4 sides of the cube and i could drag windows from one to another. but now 3 sides are black and the menus don't work. the one side is fine though.... always something else going wrong just when you think you've got it sussed.... :p

If your having major problems and you can't solve them already maybe you should do a clean install of Ubuntu and then slowly step by step run through the tutorial, hopefully you will get it working?

i think i will go for a clean install. i've installed and removed loads of junk numerous times. it will be good to start again. :)

edit: sorted. re-installed, not one single hiccup along the way. everything worked first time. i dare say my pc is going to blow up in my face within the next 5 minutes for saying that. :D

i've decided to uninstall beryl. i've had it crash twice tonight for no reason. when it works it very nice but i could see myself getting bored of it after a day or 2 anyway. and stability is the most important thing to me. :)

saying that, i haven't even been running ubuntu long enough to firmly point my finger at beryl. it may well be something else causing the desktop to lockup? i guess i'll find out in a day or 2.... :p

Your completely right, stability is the most important thing for an OS and with that in mind i would have probably done the same thing although maybe i would have tried a clean install although we know you need some decent free time on our hands.

It seems to be working all well here so far...*touch wood*

:)

i did re-install - i mentioned it above... :p

well it seems solid without beryl running as i've been on my pc for a few hours now, plus it was left on all night as i'm running it as a webserver.

i'd like to give beryl another chance - if only there was some way to troubleshoot it. maybe some logfiles or something.... /goes off to google. :)

So you did, sorry must have missed it :p

Anyway take a look over at the official Beryl forums, they will be able to help you trouble shoot. It's worth a shot anyway.

Good luck!
