Beryl

Also worth noting that its very customisable. You cant turn of all the effects and theres a fair few options for most of them. I have totally customised my GUI its sweet. :)

Yes, it's brilliant (Ubuntu here) and felt less of a chore to install than compiz (though I did that a while ago on FC5). Do note the customistation aspect of it, as saffyre posted. The default configuration is a bit 'generous' in the effects it uses and is more of an example of what it can do than a usable configuration.

Tone down the magnitude of the effects, disable things you don't need, change the animations to quick-fades, disable water effects and so on. With a bit of tweaking it really works as it should- clean, unobtrusively and exactly to your taste.

Running it on an X1800/A64 3700+ with no issues and no noticeable slowdown. The only issue is getting XGL and the ATI drivers to play ball. Not got that running stable yet.

Ive been struggling to enable AA with beryl and nvidia for a while but have now found a fix.

Make sure u disable fbo blur from blur settings. Force the anti aliasing settings in the nvidia control panel and then reload the beryl window manager. You should have a nicely AA cube. :)

Currently it doesnt hold for a reboot. But ill do some more reading into that.

Im running it with 8xAA and 8xAF with no slowdown.

Heres a small video I made of my desktop. Video is a bit laggy.

* add

beryl
emerald

to gnome session startup programs. ( go to system , preferences , sessions and select the startup programs tab )

Your just setting beryl and emerald to start when you login. Im not sure metacity can use XGL for its output which may be why your getting kicked back. If you didnt do this to start with you may need to restore your xorg.conf and run though some steps again so you can get back into gnome and setup the start options.

yer i adjusted some of the effects to tame it down a bit but i'm looking for some new effects to add to it , to wow some of my mates who I might be able to sway to linux soon .
