I'm after a new cable router that supports dd-wrt for under £100 and I think it's a toss up between the Asus n66U or TP-Link c7.

The only thing is is that I think dd-wrt for the C7 is in beta and i'm not sure if the N66U wifi is fast enough for 150mb broadband (hopefully im wrong).

I'm open to suggestions if there are any alternatives to the two already mentioned.

Thanks

Best to do a search on the dd-wrt forum. e.g. https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=953329

Other than those two I also see the Linksys WRT1200AC and Netgear R7000 get recommended a lot. (Kong himself uses the latter so it's pretty likely to work well. ;)) Edit: actually the latter is probably overbudget, sorry.

Also look at the DIR-862L, apparently the same hardware as the C7.

dd-wrt comes with OpenVPN and a PPTP implementation.

Well, if OP's happy with those two options, the stock firmware/merlin offers that too:

And honestly for Asus routers, I would pick Merlin as my choice of custom firmware over DD-WRT.

I'm pretty sure PPTP isn't recommended any more for security reasons. When I was setting up my own VPN, my research led me to use L2TP. OpenVPN is probably the best option anyway but never worked for me....maybe an issue with the old Home Hub 3, might be worth trying again with my new one.

OpenVPN or IPSEC VPNs should be used for security purposes. A PPTP will serve it's purpose if you only care to change your exit point with no overall regard for security however.
