What's the best out the box 1080 card currently available? My plan is to water cool it but I want a decent base clock speed to start off with.

You won't see any real world benefit by getting high base clock speed, all 1080's perform pretty much the same. You're just paying extra for a cooler in most cases, which you're then removing. Just get the cheapest you can find, but keep an eye on warranty and if you're covered by removing cooler and adding a water block. Not sure if all brands cover you on this.

All 1080s are the same. All limited to 1.093v except one of the Strixx ones which is 1.2v, but given its price (£1000), buy a Titan XP.

So buy the chepest one if you watercool. Had best results with MSI armor OC.

If you want the card that runs the quietest and coolest but without the hassle of a custom loop, then evga hybrid is a good buy. I think that's the route I'm going to go with once 1080 Ti comes out.

I'd go with Zotac's Amp Extreme model if I was after a high end 1080 however if I was simply getting a 1080 it would be the Zotac Amp, From what I've read and the buyers reviews Zotac have put good coolers on both. For me the only other choice would be EVGA but I hear they've messed up a bit with their 10 series cards so Zotac and the added benefit of a 5 year warranty is the way I'd go..

I recently purchased the AMP (non extreme) and I cant say I'd recommend it, the cooler has trouble keeping the temp below 83c without sounding like a jet engine, and although I can easily get +500 on the memory I can only get the core to boost to around 1900/1950 during gameplay. Even with max volts and full fan it won't go any higher without crashing. The wife's identical card can just about manage 2050MHz at 83c. For comparison our previous 980 Ti STRIXs ran at a constant 1400Mhz at around 77c. O/T: yes, a pointless upgrade but the itch got us, having a gaming wife makes it even harder to resist :)

Of course if you put the card under water you may have better luck.
