Hey guys, I'm looking for a top of the range 3080(or equiv) gaming laptop that can play everything fine. Which 3080 laptop has the best performance does anyone know? any suiggestions appreciated!

Budget- Up to 4/5k I don't mind nvida amd or whatever I just want high quality, this is a treat to myself after a lot of hard work this year

Alienware m17 R4 and MSI GE76 are the current highest wattage 3080 graphics.

Intel is announcing 8core 11th gen CPUs for laptops on the 11th May, so there should be some refreshes coming soon, and possibly some new models from OEMs that chose to wait for Intel.

If you drop to 16" the Lenovo Legion 7 with a 3080 looks pretty good.

thanks for the reply both, I really was set on 17" but I am not sure how much difference 16 would be so will take a look.

Do we expect some new laptop announcements after 11th of May then?

Asus has teased a new S17 laptop, and Alienware has teased a new X range, believed to be the X15 and X17.
MSI also has something later in the month but MSI will likely just stick the new 11th gen inside their current lineup.
Aorus are refreshing the 17X with 11th gen, with a full power 3080 laptop GPU like the m17 and GE76, but it will be 1080P and 72% NTSC which is a disappointment. (I would have liked to have seen 100% P3 and QHD).

Going to wait until at least the 11th before I pull the trigger, man I just wish they upped watt on the gpus so a laptop 3080 wasn't more like a 3070

I'm waiting for an GE76 with an 11th gen i9. Same as current ge76 you can get 1080p or 4k screen. Hopefully they are announced soon. I have a feeling alienware will refresh the A51M with a r3 sporting 11thgen intel and rtx3080. Hopefully in the next month we'll see more choice and actually be able to buy them given the chip shortages and such

Alienware have just released the m15 r5 but they’ve not got it with the 3080 yet.

I’d hold off, there’s also the new 51m that are due out, desktop cpu with them. They’re massive though compared to the m15/17, I can’t fit mine into a normal bag.

Yah, and they can't do 4k max settings either, and will struggle at 4k in demanding games

The 3080s are "only" around desktop 3060ti performance give or take but then it is a mobile device. My full power 3070 mobile is less than 20% slower than my desktop 3070 and only ~7% slower than the desktop 3060ti - even the 165 watt 3080s are only ~12% faster.

I know that the GTX 1080 /1070 series laptops were very close in performance to their desktop counterparts. They used the same chip and were within 10% of performance of the desktop versions. That was a great step forward for gaming on laptops :p.

Unfortunately, the new 3 Series laptops are not close to their desktop counterparts with performance at all. That goes for the 3080 mobile and also the 3070 mobile. I'm sorry if you didn't want to hear this.

Max Q versions take a substantially worse hit in performance. All these laptops should have different names all together so that consumers are aware like "3070 Light mobile version" or "3080 Light mobile version" after all Nvidia were quick to do the naming change with "Light Hash Rate (LHR)" cards.

GeForce RTX 3070 Desktop vs RTX 3070 Laptop 115W
"When comparing the RTX 3070 Laptop GPU to its desktop counterpart, it’s a bit of a bloodbath.

At 1080p, the desktop is 35% faster on average than the 115W laptop variant, it’s undeniable that the desktop GPU is significantly faster and not really in the same performance class."

Also on laptops , cooling is a big issue and with a desktop you can use faster RAM and CPU and better cooling to even increase that 35% performance to like 50-60%. So a desktop 3070/80 PC can be made to be 2 to 3 times faster than the laptop.

You can get a 140 watt variant of the 3070 mobile - it is slightly less than 20% slower than the desktop 3070 part. Mine is paired with a 10870H and holds up fairly well.

Exactly, there are multiple 3070 laptops with 140W TGP:

Lenovo Legion 5
Lenovo Legion 5i
Lenovo Legion 5 Pro
Lenovo Legion 7
Lenovo Legion 7i
Medion X25 Beast
MSI GE66/76
Asus Scar 15

Quite a few of the 130 rated ones have a performance mode in the control panel that allows them to be run at 140 as well (just not guaranteed it will run at that).
