I am looking to upgrade from this shockingly bad 17" monitor. rig is in spec.

primarily for gaming, css in particular as i play it competitively. ideally i would use a crt for this but cant be bothered taking one to lans with me so a tft would have to do. i dont know much about monitors but for games i guess i will want quickest response times, higher refresh rate and low input lag. these come before image quality

budget is undecided yet, i just want to know what would be the best money could buy for games, and can people who suggest a monitor give reasons why with response times etc. any help is appreciated though.

also worth mentioning, i would probably like my 17" to be a 2nd monitor for all my other stuff whilst i am gaming; for that reason what monitor size would go well with a 17"? as i know resolution/number of pixels/screen height has to be taken in to account 20, 21 or 22 inch.

Take a look at the new Dell 2209WA as rather than the usual TN Film panel it is an S-IPS panel.

what is the advantage of such a panel? i see it has a slow response time and even though the reviews are good? why is it so much better then other 22" out there?

reading up on S-IPS panels i think i will give it a miss, viewing angles make very little difference with me and would rather go for a TN panel monitor with better response times. the only thing stopping me going CRT is lugging it about for lans.

I got a 2ms samsung TN panel (22in) a while back.

Kinda wish I went the S-IPS route AFAIK the quality of the image is far superior compared to TN panels; the black levels on the samsung are not great.

Of course for outright speed then TN should suit you, since you mentioned LANs then you clearly take your gaming quite seriously, so your priorities might be elsewhere.

In terms of pricing, perhaps. The TN screens with aggressive overdrive (which lets them achieve the 2ms) tend to command a bit of a premium over the others, bringing them closer to some S-IPS screens in terms of cost.

Otherwise the technologies differ quite a bit, and since many consider the S-IPS panels superior in many ways there isn't really an 'equivalent' in the way that you put it, since a 6ms response time and 2ms times are just that.

What i mean is i thought a 6ms s-ips panel is the same in terms as a TN 2ms panel in terms of response time for games etc
Thought i had seen a review were they tested response times and had concluded a ips/mpva running at 6ms was equal to a TN 2ms and infact quicker than a TN 5ms?

Depends if they were testing for input lag vs. response times.

If you take that into account then yes you could prove that a 2ms panel is inferior to a 6ms S-IPS.

However that has nothing to do with the panel technology and more to do with the quality of the monitor itself.

But still, I'm not 100% sure what the deal is so you may be right. :)

TNs tend to be relatively faster on halftones (so-called g2g) compared to Black-White than IPS and VA panels. An IPS with a rated at 6ms g2g would typically be approximately twice that, 12ms, for a full black-white-black transition. While the TN rated at 2ms g2g might not be faster than the IPS at all at transitions larger than a halftone, even though the specs would lead you to believe it's 3 times faster.

TNs are generally faster, but the g2g response times are not a measurment for it as it's really not comparable across panel types. (It's not really comparable across different RTC-implementations on the same panel type either.)
