Thinking of getting an mp3 player. Is the iPod really the best out there or should I be considering alternatives instead?

Not sure you can get iPods in 4-8mb :D Joking aside, yea, iPods are great (Nanos). Can't fault them to be honest. I would like to try a Zune though.

Cor that'd be good, playing 2 songs!

Nano's are a great size and are dead simple, have a look at the rival iriver and creative offerings too, they're all good for the money tbh. :)

Got a Nano here.

Can't fault it, although the headphones supplied are rubbish and I sodding hate iTunes, but there are alternatives for both those problems.

It's a really nice little player. :)

depends what you want to do with it. the d2 is a formidable 4gb player. its touch sceen, same size screen (and better quality) as an ipod video, upgradable memory (takes 8gb sd cards), 50 hour battery life playing music, very very good sound quality. plays flash files and games.drag and drop...

nano's aren't really even in the running:)

I hear lots of good stuff about the Sandisk Sansa, more feature then an ipod and cheaper :)

Just picked one of these up for the missus - 2 gig for £29.99.

Its a really nice bit of kit tbh - lets see how long it takes her to abuse it!

bought an 8 gig player off an auction site for 23 quid inc shipping. Brand new. Smaller than an ipod nano, and slightly larger than the ipodclip thing. sound is ok, and it does video too, but no FM transmitter.

Look for the sellers that sell direct from china/hong kong with good feedback. I took a chance and its worked out, it takes a week or so for it to be shipped over though. My thinking is that for a quarter of the price of an ipod, even if this dies, i can buy another 3 more...

Thanks. I'm quite tempted by the iaudio D2 but one slight drawback is that, according to reviews, it only uses WMV files. Is this still the case? Is there any firmware that would allow it to support MP3 or OGG? Or will Rockbox do that?

Is Rockbox better than the standard firmware?

no that was referring to recording - it currently only records in wma. it plays .mp3s, .aac's and m4a's (with some hacking about involved). 'normal' compress .ape files apparently work (ive not tried this yet), .ogg works (there's a bug with .ogg id3 tags at the moment, doesnt affect you if you browse by folder like i do). flac is support (ful 1.13 or 1.14 up to level 3 currently). it seems to be a bit picky with certain 320k mp3's, but ive not seen this with any lower bitrates.

...it does support quite a wide range of file types :)

rockbox is open source firmware. It has some nice feature and being open source means new codec support is very easy to write in. bledd. wasn't entirely correct though, only certain iaudio plays support rockbox, the d2 isnt one of them yet and probably wont be vfor a very long time.
