Hi Guys,

My parents TV has just gone, so Im looking for a decent replacement within the fortnight really. Not looked at LCD/plasmas for a while so Im unsure whats on the market so hoping you have some ideas. Budget is probably going to be £1750 max perhaps a smidgen more...

From my own knowledge Ive recommended only really touching Panasonic for Plasmas and Sharp for LCDs - any other decent manus for those 2 types?

Only requirements they have quoted for me are at least 2 scart sockets (also HDMI for the future), that it is mainly black (perhaps with silver accents :p, as looks are important to them) and it comes with a decent manu stand.

Tried to look for good up-to-date review sites for TVs, but havent found any with a good range of reviews - know any?!?

TIA

Need to specify usage more first, PC/SD TV/Sky/Sky HD/Xbox 360. What's it used for? As these have a huge effect on what tv to buy, my LG lcd tv is immense for PC/360 use but crap for SD Tv.

Soz totally forgot...

Primarily for SD TV using NTL (mainly asian channels so they arent that good quality from memory), hopefully moving onto HD version whenever that comes out - wont ever be used for PC connection, though perhaps a console but unlikely (just think what your own old folks do :p)...

Integrated freeview would be a bonus but not required...

Thanks

Just been looking around today and to me I doubt I can find decent 42" LCD HDTVs for my budget, so I think Im stuck with plasma. What I have found is the Panasonic PX600CAB for about £1700 so I think thats the front runner unless you guys have any objections with that for what I need it to do?

I just bought the TH42PX60 for £1400. Thats the same as the PX600 but without the upgraded speakers and with only 1 inbuilt freeview tuner. Do you need the speakers on the PX600 - I mean do you already have a surround sound setup?

No surround setup Im afraid - my parents are actually against them as they dont want cables going everywhere - so a good sound setup inbuilt would be useful until I persuade them otherwise...

Ive tried to find the differences between the PX60 and PX600 but Panasonics website isnt playing ball :/

Forgot to ask - was that the CAB version?

Cheers for the info - hopefully Ill get some time to call around a few places today to check prices before I pop out and get it. Hopefully its within my budget :)

I just know the TVs just gonna be wasted by my parents and their dodgy asian channels :p

Bah Im buggered - seems the prices have gone up for the PX600CAB recently (I think its hard to get) and its kinda out of my price range if Im sensible...

Now in the dilemma to wait for it to drop (when more stock is around?!?) or just plump for the PX60CAB which I can get for about £1350 (£400 cheaper than the PX600CAB was - cant see the differences being worth that much since the displays are identical it seems)...

Choices - choices

For me the look of the TV was just as important as having a great picture as it one of the biggest items in the room and am planning on keeping it for quiet a few years to come...

Sometimes i feel like i gone crazy to spend £2000+ on a TV..But everytime i look at my pioneer 436xde with it on or off i feel like it was money well spend..

Pioneer.

End of conversation. Their plasma TVs are draw dropping. The only catch is there are problems with the HDMI ports and SKY HD at the moment but they'll be sorting that out shortly.

Actually the best are Fujitsu, but if the Panny is out of the price range the fujitsu is nearly double.

And dont just say Pioneer - its your preference. If you can stick the judder and poor black levels then pioneer are for you ;) As i say often, the money Pioneer dropped What Hi-Fi has been a stunning success for them.

Only your own eyes can tell you what is 'the best' Have a look at Pioneer, Panasonic + Hitachi as a minimum.

If you want the best, wait till end of OCT this is when most brands will have their latest models in the shops.

For LCD Sharps new range look to be the best and if you want 1080p thats where it will be cheapest too.

46" 1080p HDMI 1.3 (latest spec) for approx £2000

*PS3 is the first component to utilise HDMI 1.3 but toshiba's high end HD-DVD model due in November will be ouputing in 1080p (basic model 1080i only)and of course upcoming Blu Ray players will include it too.

Hmm food for thought - I could definitely stretch to 2k for such a TV - 1080p would make it much more future-proofed and worth the money especially since its slightly bigger anyway...

How likely is this to hit on time though? Im tempted to just get the PX60CAB just because I can get it so cheap at the moment, also unsure if I can make my parents wait 6 weeks for a proper TV without being 100% sure these new ones turn up...
