Best 4X space game

I really like sins of the solar empire but it's not really a 4x.

I never really got into it, I might give it a go another time.
Looking at videos Distant Worlds : Universe looks pretty good. Is there a Star Wars mod for it?
Endless Space looks very easy to automate.
I would suggest you give a try to Final Frontier for CIV4 (Beyond the Sword Expansion)
Preferably try the Final Frontier Plus. I still play it over those years, and tried most of the ones above (inc Endless Space).
It's not on the list, but perhaps you'd be interested in AI War.
It's remarkable because in contrast to all other space 4xs, you have to tread softly and be very sneaky so that the enemy AI doesn't notice what you're up to. Go in with guns blazing, and you're toast.

Personally, it's Distant Worlds Universe hands down (although I haven't played the Space Empires series). Although DWU may look dated from screenshots and gameplay videos, the gameplay is miles ahead of any other 4x I've played recently.
The developers are also great and keep adding new modding capabilities, so that aspect should only get better as time goes on.

What add ons? Which ones are decent? I'm hopping the GC3 will be good, can't say I've been to impressed by what's been shown so far.
GC2 and MO2 are the best.
