Im looking to get a 6870 for a htpc that will be used for light gaming.

Im interested in the quietest at idle. Ie, for watching films. I dint expect it to be quiet under load. Thanks.

The 6870 is a little too close for my liking towards the pricing of the GTX560Ti which is only about £20 more and it's a lot more powerful.

The XFX 6870 is only £140 mind.

It's not a "lot" more powerful. Granted it is better but we're not talking leagues.

Edit: Actually I guess that depends on your definition of 'a lot' which of course is debatable :p

If the OP only wants to do light gaming, might as well get a 6850... you can get one for around £110 now... still a great budget gamers card.

this will be for just the HTPC outputting only to a 3D hd tv

i prefer to stick to AMD as i managed to get the 6950 working in 3d ok with the TV i have.

The card will be required to play games like f1 2011 and other mainly controller friendly games.

The reason for quiet at idle/low use is for playing films [1080p 3d], im not to worried about it being noisy during gaming

was thinking the 6850 is a little to weak, the 6870 seems to have quiet a fps increase over it

i have the sapphire 5870 vapor x,and its silent,if the 6870 is the same then go for that, btw they are similar performance,i play everything maxed inc bf3 at 1920x1080 no problems

I can max out F1 2011 @ 1080p easy with my Sapphire 6870 on my setup.
BF3 i do High Settings without the MSAA and it runs smooth at around 60fps (Vsync enabled).

Might hang on for a bit hopefully the 6870 will drop in price. Or get a second hand one.

Think it will fit the case..just

I owned XFX 6870 with dual fan cooling (Black Edition) and it was whisper quiet, even under moderate load. These 'Black Edition' models seem to be hard to find these days though...
