Apologies in advance, I know it's been done to death, but I can't find the thread I remember seeing on it. What is the 'Best' 6950 available at the moment - obviously looking to unlock if still possible (MSI?) and overclock.

A mate is looking to set up an eyefinity rig with 3x1680x1050 so I have suggested he go down the single 6950 (2Gb) route until he can afford a 2nd card. Is the "MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition" card the one that still unlocks?

He is happy to go 2nd hand - would a couple of 2Gb ones at around £160 each be doable/worthwhile?

Sorry to see you've not had a reply yet :o

I'm going to hazard a guess at recommending you find an Original Rev.1 card!

Yea I have the Twin frozR III Power editions. They dont unlock, but they do have a nice clock speed on them. You'll be looking for an earlier (rev.1) version as TaKeN suggests..

If you're not looking to unlock however they're really nice cards. I have 2 in crossfire running spectacularly well :)

Are the sapphires still unlocking? I thought one of the brands was still on the 'good' silicon? The main thread seems to suggest that maybe the MSI cards are still unlocking?

Yea I have the Twin frozR III Power editions. They dont unlock

They can/do actually.
The "best" 6950 would be the Toxic, has the highest chance of unlock of the current cards - and even if it doesn't, it's performance is on par with the TwinFrozR III

No HD 6950 can be guaranteed to unlock.

The Sapphire TOXIC seems to have the highest success rate and there's no BIOS flashing involved.

At the end of the day it's a gamble and a bonus if it works.

Oh do tell, would love to know if i've missed something :D. I've tried, and had no success. Hence I was referring specifically to my cards as examples of some bought recently (august) for reference. I think I have the later revision, hence my suggestion..

Bought mine in October, shaders unlocked no problem ;o

This would seem to prove my point.

A gamble and luck of the draw.

Quite :o. For what it's worth just one of my 6950s does pretty well at handling pretty much anything i throw at it at 2560x1440 :)

Probably wouldnt be too much worse at the resolution you have in mind. What sort of games would be played?

There you go :)

Hmm there's the side-by-side. Looks like we both flashed the same BIOS, just came down to luck of the draw :)

Anyway xfire 6950s is godly so i'm not complaining :D

Just saw that deal - he wants the cards specifically for BF3 so that's effectively another £25 saves :) - I think that might be a winner.

-> Even better now at £215.99!! :)
