The Asus Matrix Platinum (will take up over 2 slots), so depending on mobo, it could be a problem or the MSI Lightning BE are regarded as the better options.

Personaly, I would go for the Lightnings, purely becausle of how well my cards clock (680 Lightnings).

I would go for a minimum of 850W PSU for any crossfire plans.

you would be better off with 2x 7950 as they are cheaper and can be easily overclocked up a 7970 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-065-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1673

Whilst your point is valid, sometimes people want the best and if money isn't a problem, then I have to disagree with "You would be better off with 2x7950's". You point out that a 7950 can be clocked to a 7970 but don't mention that a 7970 can be clocked "out of reach" of a 7950. I am not having a dig but merely pointing out the other side of the coin.

Depends what you want to do with your cards, and what resolution and how money you can waste.

If you can afford two top of the range 7970, then you can afford a good 850W PSU. If you can't, then you need to shift your priorities :)

750W will power two 7950 easily.

I'm confused as to why people STILL feel the need to recommend 7950's over 7970's when they "get the same performance".

No they don't.

A 7950 overclocked matches 7970 performance. A 7970 overclocked is faster again - it's this that people seem to forget.

So in this case, why people still say "get a 7950 as you can match a 7970" is beyond me.

Yes two 7970s will be, in practically every scenario, faster than two 7950s. That's pretty obvious given the model number and price ladder. However, what *you* seem to be missing is that two 7950s in Crossfire are more than fast enough for any need in any scenario and are far better priced on performance per pound.

Just because some one may *have* £700 or so to spend doesn't mean that they should, nor that spending more will equate to good value. It won't, simply because the 7950 is, right now,a complete bargain. The 7970 isn't and for the 10 FPS extra that you would get over the massive amount you would get from a pair of 7950s doesn't make the 7970s worth buying, or, good value for money.

Hmm.. Aren't the 7950s now selling at around £100 less than those 7970s?

Seems they are as I just checked. Are you people seriously saying that it's worth £200 more to have a pair of 7970s over a pair of 7950s? crikey, no wonder we're in a recession

And you're missing the point that it's only 5% difference which when you equate that to an actual FPS number and assess the cost is not worth it.

Go on, do the maths and let us know :D.

Careful with that common sense you might upset some one :D

I mean FFS a pair of 7970s costs £40 less than three 7950s.

Crap looks like a made a mistake buying that Vapor X 7970 for £280, shouldve just saved the extra £40 I spent and shouldve went for the 7950.

If he has the money its no harm in going with the 7970 but as its crossfire I would recommend the 7950. You can use the remaining bucks to treat yourself something nice :)

How is that sequitur?

I think he is alluding to people's care-free spending patterns which the finance world took advantage of and offered an unsustainable line of credit that the world is now paying back whilst (parts of the world) in recession.

It was a vague link but I'm sure he didn't want to write an essay of his thoughts on how we arrived to this current global economic situation.
