Best 8800 GT ?

Question- does your particular card have the exact same cooler as the picture on this store? That particular one is revision 2.0 of the card, which has a different cooler to the one I have (which is still by Zalman, but the same as on the pciture for the 256mb version).

Just wondering really, as mine is pretty quiet with the older cooler.

it's the same as the picture on the site.

Very disappointed in my new BFG from overclockers...

Well, picked a 2nd BFG 8800GT, exactly the same model as my original one, and it's clocked lower as default (and on a different BIOS as well, which I suppose is as expected). However, the defaults on the scan one were 675/1674/1900, whereas the defaults on this new one are 625/1588/1800... now how come that is? I purposely bought another BFG so I knew there wouldn't be a single problem and this is what I get, not good... see piccie below:

http://www.pugheaven.co.uk/gpuz.jpg

However, the bugger won't clock anywhere near as well as my original...

BFG 8800GT OC = 750/1850/2200 24/7 (This was from Scan about 4 weeks ago)
BFG 8800GT OC = 725/1850/2100 24/7 (This was from Overclockers today)

So, after arsing about with numerous crashes, I've realised that I've had to reduce the memory as the new card simply doesn't like 2200mhz on the mem or 750 on the core... although the shader is okay and stable. Just been looping Crysis benchmark for 99 times and it's fine... so now time to start benching again although I dont' expect that much performance increase... just had £100 knocking about and thought sod it

NOTE: Oh yeah, forgot, it WILL NOT run SLi with the CPU at 3.5ghz, machine exception every time, so had to de-clock my CPU to 3.42ghz and it's fine, really weird that?

I'll post some benchies during tonight, and may, just may eb able to play some games

Right, here's some benchs then, and it's not exactly brilliant reading and a good advert for SLi but we all knew this... so here goes..

3DMark01

1x8800GT @750/1900/2200 = 57532 3dMarks
2x8800GT @725/1850/2100 = 61811 3dMarks
Increase Of 6.9%

3DMark03

1x8800GT @750/1900/2200 = 43081 3dMarks
2x8800GT @725/1850/2100 = 64345 3dMarks
Increase Of 33.0%

3DMark05

1x8800GT @750/1900/2200 = 20982 3dMarks
2x8800GT @725/1850/2100 = 20738 3dMarks
Decrease Of 1.2% (reckon this isn't even using 2nd card at all, and decrease is from CPU)

3DMark06

1x8800GT @750/1900/2200 = 15391 3dMarks
2x8800GT @725/1850/2100 = 16902 3dMarks
Increase Of 8.9%

Have to say, surprised ay 3dmark01 increasing at all, especially as it's CPU more than GPU... from what I remember?

The biggest increase is 3DMark03, that's a nice increase of 33%, which to me, is worth upgrading... if everything went up by this amount, but we all know that's not so...

Then we get to 3DMark05 and 3DMark06, which i was expecting better things from... and both were rubbish really... especially 05' which doesn't even use the extra card I reckon?

I'd have thought 06' would've loved a 2nd card, but obviously not... and on closer inspection of 1x8800GT and 2x8800GT we get the following for 3DMark06:

3DMark06 - Difference between 1 and 2 cards:

1x8800GT
Graphics Tests 1 - Return to Proxycon 51.89 FPS 2 - Firefly Forest 54.38 FPS CPU Tests CPU1 - Red Valley 1.83 FPS CPU2 - Red Valley 2.7 FPS HDR Tests 1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 59.17 FPS 2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 64.32 FPS

2x8800GT

Graphics Tests 1 - Return to Proxycon 52.02 FPS 2 - Firefly Forest 55.79 FPS CPU Tests CPU1 - Red Valley 1.78 FPS CPU2 - Red Valley 2.62 FPS HDR Tests 1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 87.92 FPS 2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 65.84 FPS

It looks like that the only benefit you get is when HDR is enabled, then two cards come into their own...

I'm thinking of doing these benchmarks at high res, 1920x1200, and I'd expect to see a much larger gap between 1 and 2 cards? Problem is, I don't have the full version of 3DMark06, only 03/05 so I can't which is a shame...

So, now to benchmark some games me thinks and I'll post back in a bit!

1x8800GT Score = 189fps in doom3 (1600x1200, 0xAA, 0xAF)
2x8800GT Score = 246fps in doom3 (1600x1200, 0xAA, 0xAF)
Increase Of 23.1%

1x8800GT Score = 395fps in UT2004 (1920x1200 16xAA, 16xAF HQ)
2x8800GT Score = 689fps in UT2004 (1920x1200 16xAA, 16xAF HQ)
Increase Of 42.7%

1x8800GT Score = 189fps in UT2004 (1920x1200 16xAA, 16xAF HQ)
2x8800GT Score = 377fps in UT2004 (1920x1200 16xAA, 16xAF HQ)
Increase Of 49.9%

1x8800GT Score = 29.4fps in Crysis Benchmark (1920x1200, 0xAA, 0xAF)
2x8800GT Score = 39.22fps in Crysis Benchmark (1920x1200, 0xAA, 0xAF)
Increase Of 25.0%

1x8800GT Score = 6.4fps in Crysis Benchmark (1920x1200, 4xAA, 0xAF)
2x8800GT Score = 14.6fps in Crysis Benchmark (1920x1200, 4xAA, 0xAF)
Increase Of 56.0% (not that this means anything as it's unplayable no matter what)

1x8800GT Score = 189fps in CS-S Stress Test (1920x1200, 16xAA, 16xAF)
2x8800GT Score = 249fps in CS-S Stress Test (1920x1200, 16xAA, 16xAF)
Increase Of 25.0%

Currently just having a blast on COD4, and there's a massive improvement in FPS on that game, as I have the counter in the top right hand corner... don't have a benchmark for it though so can't officially do it, but I reckon I'm getting a good, 50%+ increase in FPS in COD4, plus, when enabling 2xAA, it's smooth as silk and doesn't slow down much, so result...

So, for not having more upto date games, but trying to dig some stuff out really that I can benchmark!

Do a Vantage bench.

Vantage loves the extra GPU.

With '05 and '06 I get practically the same result (give or take 50) at 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF as I do at 1280x1024 so it's most certainly CPU-bound.
