Just a quick inquiry, what is the best dual core 939 processor i can get my hands on, and how much should i be paying?

Cheers.

X2 4800+ or an Opteron 165 and clock it

Dunno how much to be honest, they are like rocking horse poo now.

opteron 185 - my mate got one at 2.96GHz stable but Im not sure what vcore is used, I dont expect its exessive though as the temps would sky rocket.

also, they are getting rare so prices could be quite steep.

stock - 185 opteron - its the fastest dual core iirc
overclocked - depends on the chip but generally the opteron 165 was regarded highly as was the x2 3800+

I disagree. Although not cutting edge technology, my 4400+ @ stock speeds still cuts the mustard. With an 8800GTX I've been running BioShock on 1920 x 1200 full settings no slowdowns. It's been far the best CPU I've ever had.

Mine was clocked to 2.6Ghz

I think Mancubus means they are rare as opposed to not any good, the X2's are still great chips indeed.

Opteron 180's are still around at a decent price (obviously can't mention where, but check the usual places). Though if thinking about a 185, check the mobo support (I'm sure you would anyway) as being a late addition to the range, some mobo's only support up to a 180 (like my MSI K8N).

And they don't all overclock spectacularly, mine wont go over 2.5 in my mobo, even with extra volts!

Ive got a single core 4000 and a dual core 4200 - the dualy was great - im gonna sell both. ACtually, ive got a whole 939 system including an X1900Xt Mastercard 512 to sell........ hmmmmmmm

im running an fx55 @2.9 ,which although will not give the benchmark scores of duel cores in the real world works very well ,

Vote for an Opteron here, as they nearly always clock well. x2 4400 prices on the bay aren't as extortionate as I thought they'd be however so that wouldn't be a bad buy by any means.

my vote goes to the X2 4200+, paired up with decent ram + mobo you can expect some cracking results. here's my example of one as seen in my sig/rig

this can be seen in this thread in comparison to other cpu's http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17795829

or these everest benchies

I paid £40 for this incl del, saying that I did sell my X2 3800+ at auction for £50 incl del :D that wouldn't go aboove 2.4 woo !

I used to use a DFI SLi-DR and Opteron 165. That bad boy did 3ghz on air. The most fun i've had overclocking any chip TBH. :)

Just make sure you get a mobo that can achieve high FSB's. The DFI needed 334mhz on the fsb to run the Opty at 3ghz. It did that with ease but there are very few 939 boards that will get anywhere near that.

Any lanparty board and some of the higher level Asus boards (A8N32, etc...) were ok for those FSB's.

The best ive seen new is the Opteron 185 2x 2.6ghz, for 120 if you have good ram and MB then 3.0ghz.
But the FX 60 is the best as you can use standard 3200 ram and still have 3.0ghz.

The FX60 was in fact just about the worst value for money dual core, and also the worst clocking dual core. If you look here you will only find 1 FX60 at 3gig, all those clocks were on DFI mobo's. If you look around the net, most FX60's, unless they were under phase, rarely got higher than 2.9gig.

To the op, go for an Opty 165 or 170 or at a push a 175. Just make shure you have a good mobo if you want the best out of it.

Ive got an X2 3800. had it sitting at 2.8ghz for quite a while. Im sure if i sold my x1800 and got a 8800gt crysis would work in high/medium settings in 1440x900 at a decent fps

Well ive had both a FX60 and a Opteron 180 and i can say the FX 60 is the best because it would do just over 3.0ghz with 4 standard pc3200 dimms(dfi expert), it is poor value though (200ish) but the OP asked whitch was the best 939 cpu and thats the FX60 then the Opteron 180-185 if you have a motherboard and ram that can do 250mhz and dont need over 2gb of memory.
